Instead of an internalist account that appeals only to the inner problems and interests of pure mathematicians and philosophers it offers an externalist account. It rejects the inward view since Descartes that shucks off externalities and collateral impacts and influences it draws attention to the social complexities that characterise the period of modernity including the extreme exploitation of manual workers and their families, brutal forms of colonisations, trading of slaves, and the formation of racist ideologies. It portrays modernity as a period of contradictions and highlights that mathematics is a part of these contradictions. It argues that the internalist philosophies of mathematics contribute to these problems, washing their hands of any ethical accountability. The text interprets mathematics as being indefinite, seeing that mathematics is a part of the ongoing human constructions. It outlines a performative interpretation of mathematics, portraying mathematics as intrinsically connected to actions. Any kind of action, including mathematics-based actions, calls for ethical considerations and this leads to any mathematical practice, either in research, application, or education, to face ethical challenges. It addresses the epistemological, ontological and foundational problems traditional in philosophy of mathematics, and in the schools of the philosophy of mathematics . But it also offers an externalist applied philosophy of mathematics, which refuses to detach itself from its social milieu. Because it is printed in a mathematics education book series it illustrates with examples how a critical philosophy of mathematics can come to be an integral part of classroom practices. The outcome is to turn the traditional philosophy of mathematics on its head. To look at how external influences have shaped both mathematics and philosophy of mathematics, and turned them away from their problematic social milieu. It calls for a reordered gaze that acknowledges the 'ethical turn' and a new realism in philosophy of mathematics to acknowledge the undetachable social context of mathematics and philosophy of mathematics.
