From P.Ernest at exeter.ac.uk Mon Jul 1 18:11:40 2024 From: P.Ernest at exeter.ac.uk (Ernest, Paul) Date: Mon, 1 Jul 2024 17:11:40 +0000 Subject: [Maths-Education] NEW BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT - ETHICS AND MATHEMATICS EDUCATION In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: NEW BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT ETHICS AND MATHEMATICS EDUCATION The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Paul Ernest, Editor There will be an online launch of the book courtesy of The Critical Philosophical and Psychoanalytic Institute for Mathematics Education (CPPI-ME). Watch the website for the announcement of how to join See attachment for details of contents Overview * This is the book in mathematics education dedicated solely to ethics * Presents an emergent field of research within mathematics education (and mathematics) * Extends across theory, critique and classroom practices in mathematics education * Includes valuable contributions from the well-known international researchers in the field About this book This edited volume is an inquiry into the ethics of mathematics education, and to a lesser extent, the ethics of mathematics. The imposition of mathematics for all raises questions of ethics. What are the ethics of teaching school mathematics? What are the costs as well as the benefits? What are the ethical issues raised by the official aims of mathematics teaching, the planned curriculum, the pedagogies employed in school and college mathematics and the assessment systems? These questions are addressed in the book as well as what systems of ethics we might use. The volume ventures into a burgeoning new field. It offers a unique set of investigations, both theoretical and in terms of practices. It announces the ethics of mathematics education as a new subfield of research and includes valuable contributions from many of the best-known researchers in mathematics education; additionally, it is a valuable resource for students, teachers and researchers in the field. This is an enduring and classic source book in the field. From the wisdom of leading scholars to the little heard voices of students, this collection offers the reader many striking new insights into the ethics of mathematics and education. Many thanks! Best wishes, Birgit Pepin Dear colleagues, We are pleased to announce the Fifth International Conference on Mathematics Textbook Research and Development (ICMT5) which will be held in Trondheim from June 17th to 20th, 2025. The conference is about all issues related to the development and design, content, history and use of mathematics curriculum resources in print or digital format. The intention is to cover curriculum resources from pre-K to university settings, as well as those for home or out-of-school settings. Contributions should relate to mathematics curriculum resources (including, but not restricted to, textbooks) in any medium (including, but not restricted to digital or print), and should address at least one of the following themes: 1. Theoretical and/or methodological issues in the design of curriculum resources 2. Theoretical and/or methodological issues in research on curriculum resources 3. Theoretical and/or methodological issues in evaluation of curriculum resources 4. Studies of the use of (including interaction with) curriculum resources by students and/or teachers (including student teachers and teacher educators) 5. Studies of the production, selection, acquisition and distribution of curriculum resources within educational systems and institutions 6. Studies of relations between educational policy and curriculum resources 7. Comparative studies of curriculum resources (including, but not restricted to, international or transcultural studies) 8. Historical perspectives on curriculum resources 9. Perspectives on implications of new technical developments (such as artificial intelligence) for curriculum resources. 10. Please note that the deadline for symposia and research papers is the 20th September 2024; for posters the deadline is 1rst November 2024. Please find the First Announcement attached. Feel free to share the announcement with colleagues and friends who are interested in this field of research. For more information, please visit the conference website: https://www.ntnu.edu/icmt5/.
