Southampton Education School, University of Southampton, is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher with previous experience of qualitative research to work on a two-year research project funded by the Leverhulme Trust and directed by Dr Charis Voutsina.

The project 'Cultural rules and uses of written numerals in children's everyday environments' will examine and trace the development of preschool children's understanding of the cultural rules that govern the use of written numbers in everyday contexts alongside the development of their own written production of mathematical notations and numerals longitudinally, over their transition from preschool to Reception. The project involves collection and analysis of interview and visual data and the use of elements of participatory methods that aim at engaging children and their families in the research.

Within this role, you will be contributing to: recruiting participants (preschool children and their parents/carers), making practical arrangements for fieldwork, establishing and maintaining communication with children, parents/carers, preschool/school leaders and teachers, collecting, organising and analysing visual data, conducting and analysing interviews with young children, writing reports, journal articles and conference papers.

You will have a PhD (or due to be awarded a PhD) in Mathematics Education/Education or other related discipline and an interest in early/primary mathematics learning and development. You will also need to demonstrate experience of conducting qualitative research, including collecting and analysing interview and visual data. Previous experience of working with children of preschool or primary school age and families for research and/or education purposes is highly desirable. You will be required to travel regularly within the wider Southampton area for data collection in local preschools and schools. You may also need to travel to attend national/international conferences and other dissemination events.

This is a full-time post that is based in Southampton and requires working in person at the University campus. The post is available from 1 March 2020.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of their PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
