MATHEMATICS IN MUSIC
An LKL Maths-Art seminar
by Rolf Gehlhaar
Thursday 13th October 2011, 6.00 - 7.30pm
Mathematics plays many roles in music: it can be used to describe the
order found in music of the distant and the recent past. In so far as
music may be considered as an architecture of sound in time, it has been
used to generate order; and, of course it is essential to all the
various different processes of digital sound synthesis so important to
the music of today. This presentation will discuss some of these various
roles and their influence on the structure and sound of my own
compositions.
ROLF GEHLHAAR is a pioneer in electronic music, interactivity,
generative visuals and music, computer-aided composition and computer
controlled kinetic sculptures. He studied at Yale and Berkeley, and was
a personal assistant to Karlheinz Stockhausen and member of the
Stockhausen Ensemble for 3 years. In the 1970s he became a freelance
composer, electro-acoustic researcher and performer. He has received
major commissions, prizes, and appointments at many international
institutions such as Sydney Conservatorium (composer-in-residence),
IRCAM Paris (research fellow), Sydney Opera House (sound designer), MIT
(visiting lecturer), Hayward Gallery (two sound installations),
Yorkshire Sculpture Park (outdoor sound installation) and many others,
including more than 10 interactive sound/music installations throughout
Europe.
