Dear Colleagues,
the TURS project at IOE is co-organising a workshop for teachers on
collaboration between mathematics and science - details below. Please note the
change to the previously advertised date.
We would be grateful if you can circulate this announcement widely to
secondary mathematics and science teachers.
Whilst we will be pleased to see mathematics and science educators at
the workshop, please note that the priority is for participation by
classroom teachers.
Thanks - Phillip

SCIENCE AND MATHS TEACHERS WORKING TOGETHER:
NEW CONNECTIONS AND NEW MEANINGS
A free one-day workshop supported by:
* National Science Learning Centre
* National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM)
* The TURS Project, Institute of Education, University of London
** Professional development grants from the ENTHUSE programme
available to all state sector teachers **
Tuesday 23 February 2010, 9.30 to 16.00
at the National Science Learning Centre, York (Event code: NATBC0930)
[PLEASE NOTE CHANGE TO PREVIOUSLY ADVERTISED DATE]
This event is for mathematics and science teachers to work with new
ideas for collaboration between their subjects. The impetus to do this
is ever stronger (e.g. from the national STEM programme, and the revised
National Curriculum), hence it is timely to explore new ways of working
together to develop joint projects in schools. A conventional
understanding is that science needs mathematics for essential
techniques, whilst mathematics needs science for motivating contexts for
mathematical topics. This characterisation however can easily emphasise
division between the subjects, rather than encouraging creative
collaboration.
The event offers inspiration through a keynote address and two hands-on
workshops by current multi-disciplinary research projects:
* keynote by Mary Ratcliffe (Associate director, National SLC)
'Mathematics-science collaboration: a pedagogy for engagement';
* the Nuffield Foundation Curriculum Programme, 'A skills framework for
STEM projects';
* the Promoting Teachers' Understanding of Risk in Socio-Scientific
Issues project at IOE London, 'Working with risk and decision-making
scenarios in the classroom'.
The final session will be an ideas workshop for teachers to begin
thinking collaboratively, and continue dialogue and implementation back
at school.
Mathematics and Science teachers from the same school are encouraged to
attend together (note that ENTHUSE funding could help to support this
financially).
The event is FREE to all participants. In addition, teachers from the
state sector (school and FE) are eligible for additional funding under
the ENTHUSE programme which will pay for costs of travel, supply cover
for missed teaching, and/or a sum of money that can be spent on follow-up
professional development work at school.
