Dear all,

The November edition of NRICH, the maths enrichment website, is now live
at http://nrich.maths.org.

This month the mathematical problem-solving and mathematical thinking
theme is Modelling.

Go to Stage 1 & 2 <http://nrich.maths.org/public/monthindex.php?mm=1> if
you are interested in mathematics at a level usually encountered at
primary school.
Go to Stage 2 & 3 <http://nrich.maths.org/public/monthindex.php?mm=2> if
you are interested in mathematics at a level usually encountered at
lower secondary school.
Go to Stage 3 & 4 <http://nrich.maths.org/public/monthindex.php?mm=3> if
you are interested in mathematics at a level usually encountered at
upper secondary school.
Go to Stage 4 & 5 <http://nrich.maths.org/public/monthindex.php?mm=4> if
you are interested in mathematics usually encountered at post-16 level.

_NRICH-Rothschild Teacher Fellows_

Last week four teachers started a year of partnership with the NRICH team.

The Teacher Fellows programme has two connected purposes: Firstly to
explore ways forward in curriculum planning which genuinely embeds
problem solving within the mathematics curriculum and, over time, leads
to a classroom culture of mathematical enquiry. Secondly to find
successful dissemination formats which allow this experience to be
reported locally to other professionals.

The outcome at the end of the year will be a major article on the NRICH
site. This is an exciting way for us to be working with teachers and
progress reports will be a regular newsletter feature.

_Enriching Mathematics : Helping All Students to SHINE in Tower Hamlets_

The NRICH SHINE project has now completed three years of
aspiration-raising work with Year 10 students in Tower Hamlets, and has
just started its fourth year working for the first time with Year 8
students.

Around forty children from five schools come to Queen Elizabeth
University of London to work on mathematical problem solving after
school. The fifteen sessions spread over the year are delivered by
members of the NRICH team with special guest sessions with Nadia Baker
from the Enigma Project, and Peter Wendes from the British Go
Association. Undergraduate volunteers on the STIMULUS scheme
participate to help with the problem solving and to give children the
opportunity to talk with them about the experience of going to university.

The children have a Saturday visit to Cambridge in the spring which
includes more time with STIMULUS volunteers, a tour around colleges and
the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, and a lecture by a Cambridge
mathematician.

The year ends in June with a celebration event at Canary Wharf, hosted
by Lehman Brothers, the project sponsor, with a major keynote speaker
(previously Rob Easterway, Simon Singh and Colin Wright).

So far the energy and response of the Year 8 students, and the teachers
who bring them, has more than met our hopes and we look forward to an
exciting and enriching year ahead.

With best wishes from The NRICH Team.
