Thematic Working Group 15
"Comparative Studies in Mathematics Education"
Group Leader: Birgit Pepin
Birgit.pepin at manchester.ac.uk
The specific interest of this Working Group is to encourage and
represent research in comparative and international mathematics
education. The working group invites proposals concerning research on
the processes of, and contexts for, teaching, learning, and the
relationships among them, in international settings and comparing these.
The issues researched may consist of questions surrounding mathematics
teaching and learning in the classroom, learners' and teachers'
experiences and identities, assessment, and policy issues in different
cultures and/or countries. The research focus may include problem
solving; the nature of mathematical tasks; concept and skill
development; teaching and learning materials (such as textbooks); the
role of the teacher; social and cultural factors; issues surrounding
equity and accessibility; and the uses of technology supporting
educational practices; in various countries or cultural settings.
Furthermore, we are interested in the methodologies and
epistemologies used when carrying out such international and comparative
studies. These may include unusual or new methods of, or indeed a
discussion of, conceptual or theoretical issues in comparative
mathematics educational research. Authors may also wish to discuss, or
provide evidence of, what they perceive as rigour and quality in
comparative studies.
In line with the nature and aims of the conference, we would
like to provide a forum for international and comparative mathematics
education researchers to discuss and communicate, collaborate and
research, in an atmosphere of mutual respect. The contributions to this
Working Group will shape the thematic nature of the debates, with the
purpose of developing deeper understandings of each others' research
interests and areas. We will have 12 hours over four days in which to
advance our understandings and work.
Papers have to be submitted to the Congress Secretary by October
10th 2006, together with a pre-registration form. On this form you must
indicate which group you wish to join and whether you are submitting a
paper. If you are submitting a paper, please follow the guidelines for
formatting and submission. The Group Leaders will contact you by 25th
November 2006 concerning the acceptance of your paper, and at a later
date we will inform you how your paper will be discussed and fitted in
with the whole Working Group. If you wish to act as a reviewer for our
group, please mention this in the pre-registration form. Whether you
enter as an author or as a reviewer, please make sure you read the CERME
Guidelines for Authors and the Paper Review Guidelines (including the
Criteria for review). Please refer to the CERME website
http://www.cyprusisland.com/cerme for more details, in particular for
Participation & Paper Submission
http://www.cyprusisland.com/cerme/participation&papersub.htm .
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to
contact me (birgit.pepin at manchester.ac.uk), or any of our collaborating
colleagues (Eva Jablonka- De (jablonka at zedat.fu-berlin.de); and Richard
Cabassut- Fr (richard.cabassut at laposte.net).
Looking forward to your contributions and to a fruitful
conference/workshop in Cyprus.
Best wishes,
Birgit
