Research Lectureship in Numeracy

The Bowland Charitable Trust has generously donated 5 million pounds to
Lancaster University. This major gift is being used to develop
institutional strength in a number of areas. As a consequence, two
appointments will be made in one or more of the following research
topics: Digital Literacies, Learner Engagement and Participation,
Resource Management and Leadership in Education, Numeracy Skills. The
Department of Psychology at Lancaster University invites applicants for
the research lectureship in Numeracy.

The appointment is available at either the Lecturer or Senior Lecturer
level, and subject to successful probation etc., will be a permanent
position. If successful, the candidate for the research lectureship in
numeracy would work in the area of mathematical cognition and children's
numeracy as part of a research network involving two 5A and 5*rated RAE
Psychology Departments at Lancaster and York, built on collaborations
between two key centres:
Lancaster's Centre for Research in Human Development and York's
Institute for Effective Education (IEE). The appointee will conduct
research related to understanding children's numeracy (broadly
defined) that complements an ongoing network research into the cognitive
and social determinants of literacy, numeracy and reasoning skills among
infants and school-aged children. Research themes might
include:

Understanding the skills necessary for computation and mathematical
reasoning (including working memory and executive function); Exploring
the intellectual and language demands of the maths curriculum;
Identifying the source of mathematical difficulties among children with
language learning deficits; Developing classroom, home and technological
interventions that enhance children's acquisition of numeracy skills.

The post is a research lectureship. The terms of the position are
designed to allow the appointee to concentrate on their research as well
as build collaborative links via a greatly reduced teaching and
administrative load in the first five years, with generous start-up and
ongoing financial support for collaboration with IEE. In addition to
research, the post-holder will develop a portfolio of masters and
short-course teaching to contribute to Lancaster University's strategy
for growth in professional development courses.

Informal enquiries about the post can be made to Professor Tom Ormerod,
tel +44 1524 593164, email: t.ormerod at lancaster.ac.uk. If you would like
to find out more about the planned collaborations between Lancaster and
York please contact either Dr John Towse
(j.towse at lancaster.ac.uk) or Dr Kate Cain (k.cain at lancaster.ac.uk).
Further particulars are available from any of the above or from the
University.
