Colleagues (with apologies if you receive this more than once)

The mathematics education group at the University of Southampton has secured funding for a one-year project examining aspects of conceptual understanding of number in young children (of primary/elementary school age) who may have mathematics learning difficulties.

We are looking to appoint a part-time Research Assistant for four days per week for 9 months (or equivalent time commitment). Flexible working arrangements are possible. Pay is likely to be in the range £15500 - £18500 (pro-rata 0.8), depending on experience.

The role will include searching and reviewing the research literature, working with pupils of primary/elementary school age using screening tests and semi-structured clinical interviews, and analysing pupil approaches to arithmetical problem solving.

The successful applicant is expected to have a good first degree in Education, Psychology or Mathematics, and desirably, a higher degree in one of these domains (e.g. MSc, PhD), plus some experience in collecting quantitative and qualitative data, in qualitative interviewing, and in the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data.

The post is likely to be a suitable post-doc position, or, perhaps, for someone looking to do our MPhil in research methodology. The position may also suit a visiting researcher (though no further assistance with travel or other expenses is available, unfortunately).

The starting date for the Research Assistant position is 2 October 2006.

The project is being led by Dr Charis Voutsina, Mathematics Education Research Group, School of Education, University of Southampton. If you would value an informal preliminary discussion about this appointment, please contact Charis either by email or by phone:

The University of Southampton is in the top ten of research-led universities in the UK for both research quality and research income.
