Dear All,

The Mathematics Education Research Group at King's College London runs
a twice-termly seminar series. The first seminar in this year's seres
will be:

The construction of personal example spaces: a socio-cognitive
perspective on the affordances and constraints of mathematical tasks
Dr Anne Watson, Department of Educational Studies, University of Oxford

In this seminar I will present some active current thinking about
improving mathematics teaching.  I shall introduce the concept of
personal example spaces as a way to describe the organization of memory
of past mathematical experiences, and use this to account for
situational-specificity of learners’ engagement in mathematics. This
view is not merely another theoretical perspective to our understanding
of learning mathematics. I shall show how seeing teaching as organizing
experience of examples can inform both social and cognitive
perspectives on classroom learning.  Currently I am thinking of
perception as a sensory response which is informed and constrained by
social, cultural, situational and other influences.  In this seminar I
shall offer some instances which can be used as raw material for theory
but are also practical teaching ideas.
