The Seventeenth ICMI Study: Technology Revisited
Digital technologies and mathematics teaching and learning: Rethinking
the terrain
The 17th ICMI Study will be concerned with the use of digital
technologies in mathematics teaching and learning in countries across
the world. In particular it will focus on:
• cultural diversity and how this diversity impinges on the use of
digital technologies in mathematics teaching and learning particularly
in developing countries.
• a set of themes to serve as the organising framework: Mathematics and
mathematical practices; Learning and assessing mathematics with and
through digital technologies; Teachers and teaching; Design of learning
environments and curricula; Implementation of curricula and classroom
practice; Access, equity and socio-cultural issues; Connectivity and
virtual networks for learning.
The Discussion Document for the Study can be downloaded from the webpage
http://www.math.msu.edu/~nathsinc/ICMI/
The Study Conference will take place 3-6 December 2006 and will be
hosted by the Hanoi Institute of Technology. As is the normal practice
for ICMI studies, participation in the Study conference will be by
invitation only, given on the basis of a written proposal of a
contribution (6-8 pages, in English). Details about the proposals are
on the same webpage.
The proposal should be submitted electronically at
http://www.math.msu.edu/~nathsinc/ICMI/
Date of submission: no later than January 15, 2006.
Submissions will be reviewed and decisions about invitation to the
Conference will be sent by the middle of May, 2006.
The Study Book that will follow from ICMI Study 17 will be published in
the ICMI Study Series. The volume will be informed by the papers and
the discussions at the Study Conference as well as its outcomes. A
report on the Study and its outcomes will also be presented at the 11th
International Congress on Mathematical Education to be held in Mexico
in 2008.
The 17th ICMI Study is co-chaired by Celia Hoyles and Jean-Baptiste
Lagrange.
