Subject: [Maths-Education] Seminar at Sheffield Hallam
Well as I was just saying we have a thriving research group to which we are
often delighted to welcome esteemed visitors.....
Mathematics Education Research Group
School of Education
Sheffield Hallam University
Seminar programme
Wednesday 12 May 2004
4.30-6.00pm
Lost Pedagogies
Anne Watson
Oxford University
As a generation of mathematics educators who learnt mathematics from classic
textbooks reaches retirement, we could ask what, if anything, is going to be
lost. In this seminar we shall look at treatments of a mathematical topic
from the secondary curriculum and analyse them using Gibson's notions of
affordances and constraints, asking 'what is it possible to learn?' It
seems that some textbook authors use students' natural propensity to
classify and generalise, providing starting points for investigation which
arise naturally from their examples. And some textbook authors don't.
Seminars are held at
the Centre for Mathematics Education
25 Broomgrove Road, Sheffield S10 2NA
There is no charge for this activity but please let us know if you intend to
be there. Tea and coffee from 4.00pm.
