We have a vacancy at Sheffield Hallam University - see below for the =
official advert from this Tuesday's Guardian. I thought I
might add a few more details for those of you who don't know Sheffield =
and could be wondering whether to relocate your lives!
=20
As well as the obvious loveliness of being in a place where we teach =
undergraduate maths as well as working with one and two year
PGCE students we have a lot of local schools bringing kids in to the =
centre and we have a thriving research group. To give you a
sense of the kind of things we get up to ... last week our first year =
undergraduates had a history of maths trip to find out
about Newton at the Grantham museum, this Friday we have 50 girls from a =
Barnsley school coming in for an engineering mathematics
day, and one of our Professors of Mathematics Education (Hilary Povey) =
frequently opens her house to staff and students for supper
and a maths cabaret.
=20
The campus is green, the city is very green and the surrounding =
countryside is the Peak District.
The university is committed to widening participation, the city has NO =
selective schools, and the wider partnership area we work
in is incredibly diverse and interesting.
Houses are cheap, allotments are plentiful, crime is low, and there is a =
good train to London when you feel the need for
metropolitan culture.
=20
Come and join us!

Job description
=A326,592 - =A335,367, pro-rata where applicable

Sheffield Hallam's School of Education is one of the largest and most =
successful Schools of Education in the UK with over 100
academic staff and more than 4000 students. We have a large integrated =
Secondary Initial Teacher Education programme with students
enrolled on a number of courses leading to QTS in 11 different subject =
areas. We are working in partnership with regional LEAs,
schools and colleges to enhance educational achievement across the =
region and to promote inclusion. There is an active and diverse
research culture and staff are involved in contract research activity =
for both private and public sector organisations.

We are currently seeking well-qualified and enthusiastic specialists in =
a number of areas to join us in the subjects shown below.

Mathematics Education

We seek those who can contribute to and take a lead in some or all of: =
Secondary QTS programmes - Undergraduate courses in
mathematics - Adult numeracy programmes - Continuing professional =
development programmes for teachers and school support staff -
ICT provision and pedagogical developments in mathematics education - =
Partnership with schools and colleges - An active
mathematics education research group - Curriculum development - =
Inclusion and diversity in mathematics education - General
Professional Studies in Education.
Ref: 551/03

Whichever role you apply for, you will need an honours degree or =
equivalent plus QTS and have completed M level study. Along with
relevant teaching experience in a school or college, you will have =
contributed to curriculum development and/or CPD activity in
your subject area and to the support of student teachers and/or NQTs. =
You will also be familiar with reflective practice and the
management of change in educational settings. A significant research =
record is not essential but you must be keen to develop your
own research skills. We are happy to consider this post as secondment =
opportunities for experienced teachers who wish to become
more significantly involved in initial and continuing teacher education.

Interviews will be held on either 19/20/21 May 2004.

Working towards equal opportunities.
