Discussion Group 6 The Education of Mathematics Teachers

Aims and Focus
This discussion group is contracted to consider issues such as: What =
would be an appropriate balance between the main components of teacher =
education - e.g. mathematical, educational, didactical and pedagogical =
components - for different educational levels? In particular, what =
mathematical or didactical competencies should different kinds of =
teachers have? What are the possible consequences of teachers being =
educated as generalists with some mathematical background, or primarily =
in mathematics with separate educational and pedagogical components =
being added, or in an integrated manner? How should research on the =
teaching and learning of mathematics be dealt with in teacher education? =
=20
It is intended that a number of papers by contributors will be selected =
and these will form the agendas for the discussions. These selected =
papers will be made available prior to the meeting on the website =
relating to the group. Where colleagues may have difficulty accessing =
the Internet the papers will be pr=E9cised and made available at the =
group meetings to aid the group discussion. Note, however, that they =
will not be formally presented in the meetings of the discussion group. =

A set of indicative questions is included on the website =
http://www.icme-10.dk/. It is not intended that these define the areas =
of discussion - that will be done by the participants either through =
preparatory papers or during the meetings. Colleagues wishing to =
participate in the discussion group are encouraged to e-mail potential =
areas of discussion to the group chairs for inclusion in the draft =
programme even if not supported by a discussion paper.

Call for Papers

We invite papers that relate to the aims and focus of the group. Papers =
will normally be a maximum of 8 pages in length and should be submitted =
by e-mail to either of the two group chairs, preferably by the 1st =
January 2004 but in any case no later than 26th January. =20
All papers submitted should=20
