Teaching algebra through discussion: from transmission to collaboration
Malcolm Swan, Nottingham University
The seminar will report on the progress of current research into the
teaching of repeat GCSE courses in colleges of FE and on my attempts to
change the predominant transmission culture into one which involves
discussion and reflection. In particular, we will focus on the teaching of
algebraic concepts and discuss video clips of low attaining students
working on such discussion activities. In addition, we will reflect on the
difficulties and possibilities when confronting teachers' existing beliefs
about learning.
Seminars are held at
the Centre for Mathematics Education
