THIRD ANNUAL INSTITUTE
OF
MATHEMATICS PEDAGOGY
The Third Annual Institute of Mathematics Pedagogy will take place at the=20
Department of Educational Studies, University of Oxford, from Thursday July=
=20
31st to Sunday August 3rd. The Institute will be led by John Mason and=20
Anne Watson and will consist of workshops, seminars, readings, reflections=
=20
and discussions about teaching and learning mathematics. There will be a=
=20
full programme from lunchtime on the 31st until lunchtime on the 3rd,=20
including evening activities.
There will be no papers or formal presentations; the group will work=20
intensively and creatively with issues and ideas to develop thinking and=20
practice. New participants are very welcome.
This year=92s theme will be:
Imagining & Expressing Mathematical Ideas:
In this theme we are likely to work on mental imagery, on switching between=
=20
diagrammatic and symbolic expressions, the contrast between what you=20
'sense' or intuit and what you can express; we can also work on how trying=
=20
to express yourself transforms what you think.
The price will be about =A3250 and this includes accommodation at Wadham=20
College, all meals and other refreshments, materials and so on. Places=20
will be reserved on a first come, first serve basis on receipt of a =A350=20
deposit and are strictly limited in order to allow full participation for=20
all. Cheques should be made out to: Institute of Maths Pedagogy and sent=20
to: Tracy Johns, Centre for Mathematics Education, Open University, Walton=
=20
Hall, Milton Keynes, MK7 6AA.
