[Maths-Education] Laurie Buxton

Colleagues may not have heard that Laurie Buxton passed away 
just before Christmas. Laurie was Chief Inspector of Mathematics 
in the former Inner London Education Authority, and wrote widely 
on mathematics learning. One of his best-known, and still widely 
cited, writings was Do You Panic about Maths?: Coping with 
Mathematics Anxiety (1981), which along with Sheila Tobias's 
Overcoming Math Anxiety argued for the importance of emotional 
aspects in mathematics learning. Laurie was a regular attender at 
BSRLM conferences before his retirement (around 1991). It is 
hoped that there will be a memorial service for Laurie early this 
year.
