First Announcement and Call for Papers
May 19 - May 22, 2003
Abstracts should be sent as hard copy or preferably by email as plain text=
=20
or as an MS Word attached document, by February 1, 2003. Please include=20
title, author(s), institution, postal address, fax and telephone numbers=20
and email addresses.
Authors of abstracts accepted for presentation will be invited to submit=20
full papers for consideration for inclusion in the Conference Book (which=20
will carry an ISBN number, and will comprise refereed papers only).
Papers should be formatted and referenced according to strict American=20
Psychological Association (APA) guidelines. Further details relating to=20
submission of papers will be provided with the notification of acceptance=20
of abstracts. All papers included in the Conference Book will have been=20
subjected to a refereeing process, with international scholars=20
participating in this process.
Please pass on a copy of this Announcement to any interested colleagues. It=
=20
is expected that the list of keynote speakers will be finalized by October=
=20
2002, and a brochure will then be available summarising and confirming all=
=20
details of the Conference, and of the Conference Book which will be=20
published in association with the Conference.

The Programme Committee invites abstracts, not exceeding 250 words, of=20
proposals for workshops or paper presentations. Papers exploring issues in=

science, mathematics and technical education in relation to the following=20
themes would be especially welcomed.

The Conference will be held at Universiti Brunei Darussalam, located near=20
the shore of the South China Sea, about 12 kilometres from Bandar Seri=20
Begawan. The sultanate of Negara Brunei Darussalam is situated on the=20
north-western shore of the island of Borneo and is bordered on three sides=
=20
by the Malaysian state of Sarawak. The capital city, Bandar Seri Begawan,=20
blends the modern with the traditional, and is one of the most picturesque=

Registration and Accommodation
All participants must register for the Conference. The registration fee=20
will be BND220, which covers refreshments, lunches, the Conference Dinner=20
and Conference Book. An Early Bird registration fee of BND170 applies for=20
participants who register and pay the registration fee before April 15,=
2003.
A range of accommodation is available with costs ranging from about BND15=20
for University hostel rooms (bed and breakfast) to approximately BND200 per=
=20
day for city hotels. Further details are in the registration brochure,=20
which will be sent out later in 2003. Regretfully, Universiti Brunei=20
Darussalam is unable to offer any financial assistance to participants.

From an international perspective, the annual conferences of the=20
Department of Science and Mathematics Education (within the Sultan Hassanal=
=20
Bolkiah Institute of Education at Universiti Brunei Darussalam) make a=20
unique and significant contribution to SMT education. Each of the annual=20
conferences has not only attracted internationally recognised scholars,=20
including outstanding keynote speakers, but also significant numbers of=20
school teachers.
