When I taught in the very poorest areas of Salford, UK (Coronation 
Street), I was very reluctant ever to set 'homework' because I 
knew it was just another means by which advantaged children 
(with educationally-aware parents) could get even further ahead of 
disadvantaged children.
Here in Fiji, young children of 6 and 7 years old stagger to and 
from school with huge rucsacs full of books.... Heart-rendering to 
see them in the blazing sun - or pouring rain!
