Lecturer in Mathematics Enrichment and Communications Technology

Sponsored by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations
Syndicate and the Millennium Mathematics Project the holder of this
distinctive post will act as Director of the highly successful NRICH
Online Mathematics Project. NRICH publishes a monthly on-line
magazine for schools at http://nrich.maths.org and provides free
services to its worldwide and fast growing membership, including an
'Ask A Mathematician' answering service, mailing lists,
video-conferenced workshops, and in-service training for teachers.
The Director will lead a large project team (including 4 research
officers), managing the activities of the project and pursuing
teaching and research initiatives in support of its aims. Current
research activities are examining the use of NRICH resources by
young people, their parents and teachers, and the potential of
on-line peer-assisted learning.

This vacancy arises on the retirement of Mrs Toni Beardon who
initiated and successfully established the project. The successful
candidate will bring relevant experience of mathematics education,
of team leadership, and of educational research to the position, as
well as a keen interest in mathematics enrichment and the
educational potential of ICT, and a commitment to develop and
research new ideas and effective practice in the field.=20

The NRICH Director will work in close partnership with the
Millennium Mathematics Project (MMP) based in the Centre for
Mathematical Sciences. The MMP aims to support the teaching of
mathematics in schools and to change public attitudes to mathematics
and its applications.=20

The School of Education has a national and international reputation
as a leading centre for study and research in education. It is
currently undergoing a major expansion which will result in large
and active teaching and research groups in the areas of mathematics
education and of educational ICT, creating good opportunities for
productive collaboration beyond the immediate NRICH team.=20

The appointment is available for a fixed period of five years from 1
September 2001, or as soon as possible thereafter, and will be on
the University Lecturer grade, currently =A321,435-33,058 per
annum.  The closing date for applications is 24 May 2001.
