[Maths-Education] Definitions

I am looking for some research on the role of definitions in mathematics.
Function, continuity,  and probability are some of the definitions that
interest me.

Can a student have a conceptual understanding of a definition, or is a
definition simply memorized.

If such a thing exists, how can one assess conceptual understanding of a
definition?
