You'll find 1999 data relating to Grade 8 (Year 9) students for all the
countries participating in TIMSS-R on page 188 of the international report
available at <http://timss.bc.edu/timss1999i/publications.html>

In England, 35% of students were taught by teachers aged from 40-49, and 22%
by teachers aged 50 or over. The respective international averages were 33%
and 21%. The Australian figures were 36% and 16%, the Canadian 25% and 26%,
the New Zealand 35% and 30%, the US 37% and 27%. These comparisons are the
important point. This is a global issue and we are going to see increasing
flows of teachers -notably young teachers- across international boundaries
-particularly in the English-speaking world- as shortages bite in affluent
areas.
