Dear Colleagues,
You are invited to a seminar at Warwick on Wednesday May 17th. The
speaker will be Professor Barry Cooper from the University of Durham, and
his title will be =93National Curriculum tests in maths, social class and
culture: findings from two ESRC-funded projects=94

=93This seminar will consider ways in which the national testing of
mathematical understanding using =91realistic=92 test questions might, as=
 an
unintended consequence, tend to amplify social class differences in
measured achievement. It will draw, theoretically, on the ideas of Basil
Bernstein and Pierre Bourdieu and, empirically, on the findings of
research at Key Stages 2 and 3=94.

The seminar will be at 4.45 for 5.15pm in room WS204 of the Science
Eduation Building on the Westwood Campus. Please contact me for travel
details if necessary.

All will be very welcome.
