Just to introduce to you our new UoN/SoV PhD student Bethany Lawrence and Liverpool PhD student  Laura Gosling.

Bethany Lawrence is a new PhD student working in Kevin Gough's Lab, studying pathology related changes in glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) on breast cancer cells at the University of Nottingham. She will be contributing to Glycoweb's discovery objective, focusing on expanding the repertoire of molecular tools available to study GAGs.

Beth's career is in its early stages, she completed her integrated Biology Masters at the University of Lincoln in 2020. Her research project on "characterising the effect of post translational modification on HSP90 function" established her keen interest in the molecular mechanisms of diseases, especially cancer. She worked in industry for 5 years across multiple biotechnology companies developing skills in microbiology, molecular biology and specialising in protein expression and antibody design. Currently, she is continuing her research journey at the University of Nottingham, using next-generation phage display technology with the aim to create probes capable of discriminating between subtle pathology-related differences in GAGs on breast cancer cells.

Beth's other interests include playing bass, painting, tabletop games and snowboarding.

Laura is a Glycoweb PhD student primarily supervised by Dr David Turner at the University of Liverpool. I will be utilising 3D gastruloids to understand the roles of glycosaminoglycans in early mammalian development. The project will also have a strong focus on proteomics with further supervision from Prof Claire Eyers, who specialises in Mass Spectrometry and phosphoproteomics.

Having always had a curiosity for cellular and molecular biology, I graduated with a first-class undergraduate degree in Biochemistry in 2018, and then went on to study an MRes in Translational Medicine at the University of Liverpool. During my MRes, I completed three short research projects focusing on pancreatic pathophysiology with the supervision of Prof Alexei Tepikin. After this, I spent some time working at the NHS Liverpool clinical laboratories' Virology department, aiding covid testing in the Liverpool region, however I missed being involved in academic research and returned to the University of Liverpool as a core technician, before taking up my current PhD position.

Outside of academic research, I spend my time embroidering and baking; I am a massive foodie and love trying different international cuisines, and will usually try to cook them myself! I also love travelling and being around nature whenever I'm not in the lab!
