We propose using large underwater hydrophone arrays to detect the thermoacoustic waves generated as these particles scatter off nuclei in seawater. We present a first-principles calculation of dark matter-induced acoustic signals, discuss frequency-dependent attenuation effects and the unusual background sources relative to normal dark matter searches. Released in November 2022, ChatGPT is now regularly being used by students and instructors alike for a variety of different purposes within academia. Recent releases of ChatGPT and its analogues have shown incredible promise to scale and be able to pass elements of degree courses. In this talk, we will show our results of applying ChatGPT to an entire Physics BSc degree and how it achieves a (caveated) pass at a 2:1 standard. If it were not for laboratories (or performances in other disciplines), the implementation of invigilated exams, and vivas, it could achieve this outcome undetected. In general, coding tasks are performed exceptionally well, along with simple single-step solution problems. Multiple step problems and longer prose are generally poorer along with interdisciplinary problems, although there are ways to coax better performance. We strongly suggest that there is now a necessity to urgently re-think and revise assessment practice in physics (and other disciplines) due to the existence of AI such as GPT-4. For these applications we first require a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms by which the ICL assembles and where the stars of the ICL come from. I will present our recent work developing explicit top-down constructions of open effective field theories (EFTs) for gauge degrees of freedom, with particular emphasis on the role of gauge fixing. We implement BRST quantisation on the Schwinger-Keldysh contour and show that the in-in boundary conditions reduce the doubled global BRST symmetry to a single diagonal copy. This diagonal BRST symmetry is nevertheless sufficient to guarantee that the influence functional remains gauge invariant under two independent gauge transformations, retarded and advanced, independently of the choice of initial state, the presence of symmetry-breaking phases, and whether the gauge theory is Abelian or non-Abelian. Astronomy Lunch Talks Mathias Urbano An overview of the Low Surface Brightness Science with the Euclid Space Telescope During this talk, I will revisit the efforts carried out during my PhD to conduct some of the first studies with Euclid in the Low Surface Brightness (LSB) Universe regime. This will be illustrated through the study of structures spanning three different angular scales: mock dwarf galaxies that I used to assess Euclid?s detection performance in the LSB regime for objects up to arcminute scales; tidal features investigated within the framework of Euclid?s first test observations within a single observation (0.56 square degrees); and the intracluster light of the Fornax cluster, which extends over several degrees. Paloma Morilla Signatures of fuzzy dark matter inside radial critical curves We explore how fuzzy dark matter (FDM) would modify strong gravitational lensing magnification, focusing on the region near radial critical curves. Using simulated galaxy-scale lenses, we compute magnification maps for a range of halo configurations and axion masses. We find that, compared to standard cold dark matter (CDM), FDM produces a significantly higher probability of strong central magnification, an effect that is difficult to reproduce in CDM (even when subhaloes are included). The strength and characteristic scale of this enhancement are set primarily by the de Broglie wavelength, and therefore by the axion mass and halo mass. For galaxy-mass haloes, axion masses in the range $m_\phi~10^{-22}-10^{-21}$ eV lead to distinctive magnification distributions. I will present our recent work developing explicit top-down constructions of open effective field theories (EFTs) for gauge degrees of freedom, with particular emphasis on the role of gauge fixing. We implement BRST quantisation on the Schwinger-Keldysh contour and show that the in-in boundary conditions reduce the doubled global BRST symmetry to a single diagonal copy. This diagonal BRST symmetry is nevertheless sufficient to guarantee that the influence functional remains gauge invariant under two independent gauge transformations, retarded and advanced, independently of the choice of initial state, the presence of symmetry-breaking phases, and whether the gauge theory is Abelian or non-Abelian. I will also remark that once a consistent quantisation scheme is chosen, the Schwinger-Keldysh path integral is uniquely determined, and with it the rules that constrain the construction of open EFTs. I will conclude by outlining bottom-up implications, and how these principles provide a systematic route to causal, gauge-invariant open EFTs suitable for cosmological and gravitational applications. In galaxy clusters?the largest gravitationally bound systems in the universe?these components are revealed through diffuse radio emission associated with mergers and shocks, as well as through radio galaxies powered by active galactic nuclei (AGN). Traditionally, these phenomena have been studied separately; however, growing observational evidence suggests that they are physically connected through the life cycle of relativistic plasma. In this seminar, I will present results on diffuse radio emission and radio galaxies in cluster environment and discuss how AGN activity may provide a seed population of relativistic electrons that is later re-accelerated by cluster-scale processes. All of this is viewed through the unique lens of LOFAR, whose combination of very low-frequency coverage and high sensitivity is revealing previously ?hidden? radio sky phenomena. Being a European-based array, LOFAR has recently demonstrated its strength not only in probing faint, diffuse emission, but also in reaching sub-arcsecond resolution through very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). In the second part of the talk, I will showcase how these capabilities can be used to study galaxy-scale jet sources out to redshift 3 and beyond. Astronomy Lunch Talks Mathias Urbano An overview of the Low Surface Brightness Science with the Euclid Space Telescope During this talk, I will revisit the efforts carried out during my PhD to conduct some of the first studies with Euclid in the Low Surface Brightness (LSB) Universe regime. This will be illustrated through the study of structures spanning three different angular scales: mock dwarf galaxies that I used to assess Euclid?s detection performance in the LSB regime for objects up to arcminute scales; tidal features investigated within the framework of Euclid?s first test observations within a single observation (0.56 square degrees); and the intracluster light of the Fornax cluster, which extends over several degrees. Paloma Morilla Signatures of fuzzy dark matter inside radial critical curves We explore how fuzzy dark matter (FDM) would modify strong gravitational lensing magnification, focusing on the region near radial critical curves. Using simulated galaxy-scale lenses, we compute magnification maps for a range of halo configurations and axion masses. We find that, compared to standard cold dark matter (CDM), FDM produces a significantly higher probability of strong central magnification, an effect that is difficult to reproduce in CDM (even when subhaloes are included). The strength and characteristic scale of this enhancement are set primarily by the de Broglie wavelength, and therefore by the axion mass and halo mass. For galaxy-mass haloes, axion masses in the range $m_\phi~10^{-22}-10^{-21}$ eV lead to distinctive magnification distributions. These results suggest that observations of highly magnified, compact sources near radial arcs could provide a sensitive and complementary test of fuzzy dark matter. Thursdays at 3pm, A113 CAPT ? Astronomy Weekly Seminar Dr Anik Halder (Cambridge) Physical properties and redshift distributions of KiDS-1000 galaxies using the pop-cosmos galaxy population model Accurate redshift calibration and physically motivated source sample selection are central challenges for precision weak lensing cosmology. In this talk, I will present our recent work on forward modelling redshift distributions and inferring physical properties of weak lensing galaxies in the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000) using a generative model for the galaxy population. The framework enabling this work is pop-cosmos, a calibrated galaxy population model that allows principled Bayesian inference of individual galaxy redshifts and physical properties for millions of KiDS-1000 sources. Validation against spectroscopic samples demonstrates low bias and scatter in the inferred photometric redshifts, while physical property inference enables the construction of weak lensing catalogues that mitigate intrinsic alignment systematics. We also develop a forward-modelling framework to infer the redshift distributions of the KiDS-1000 galaxies. By applying a KiDS data and survey selection model to synthetic photometric data of mock pop-cosmos galaxies, we directly characterize the redshift distributions in each of the five tomographic bins of KiDS-1000, thereby bypassing the need for spectroscopic reweighting used in conventional redshift calibration methods. Particle Cosmology and Gravity Seminar Job Feldbrugge (Edinburgh) Real-Time Path Integrals, Caustics and Interference in Cosmology Interference is one of the most universal phenomena in nature, as exemplified by the real-time Feynman path integral. Despite the ubiquity of interference patterns, their evaluation has often proven challenging. This is especially apparent when considering lensing in astrophysics in the wave optics regime and when studying quantum cosmology using the path integral for gravity. The oscillatory integrals involved are frequently conditionally convergent, converge slowly, and artefacts such as dependence on unphysical cut-offs can be difficult to avoid. Traditionally, these oscillatory integrals are approximated with saddle point methods. However, determining which saddle points to include can be a tricky exercise. Using Picard-Lefschetz theory ? a general, exact method for handling multidimensional oscillatory integrals ? I will present an unambiguous definition of the real-time path integral and an efficient numerical method for its evaluation. I will show that we can unambiguously identify the relevant instantons using resurgence theory. By going beyond the WKB approximation, we obtain asymptotic series whose interrelations enable us to detect which instantons contribute to the path integral. The resulting propagator consists of an interference pattern governed by the caustics of the underlying classical system. These methods pave the way to the study of real-time dynamical systems in our quantum Universe. The evolution of the cold, dense phase of the ISM in which star-forming H2 is predominant is less clear, with both deficient and H2-rich satellite samples having been found in observation. We compare the cluster satellite data of the cutting-edge COLIBRE suite of simulations to a subset of recent (past decade) CO surveys up to z ~ 1.6, before delving into COLIBRE?s independent predictions for the effects of the cluster environment on satellites and nearby centrals, and how this is affected by the orbital and infall history of the galaxies in question. Ideally water taps should be turned on and allowed to flow to drain for five minutes.
