Unimodular time in black holes and quantum gravity



In this talk I will motivate how unimodular time, and therefore Henneaux-Teitelboim gravity, can help solve the problem of time in quantum gravity. As a concrete example we will look at Schwarzschild spacetime with a cosmological constant and see how imposing unitarity with respect to unimodular time leads to a singularity free quantum corrected Schwarzschild spacetime. We will look at the correction terms in detail and see that they are highly suppressed and highly quantum geometrical in nature. This example spacetime should illustrate the advantages of using unimodular time in quantum gravity.

Climate change: why does 1.5°C matter?


Earth’s surface has warmed by nearly 1.5°C since the Industrial Revolution, driven primarily by emissions of carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels. But those who want to downplay the risks of climate change sometimes suggest that global warming is “just” 1.5°C so the consequences cannot be large. This talk will highlight why 1.5°C matters, with a focus on how the climate of the UK has already changed – winters are wetter, rainfall is more intense, and heatwaves are hotter. A novel ‘storyline’ approach will also be used to help communicate how the consequences of observed extreme weather events would be different in warmer (or cooler) worlds.

Transforming Spirals into S0s: clues from the Tully-Fisher relation



Almost 20 year ago we found strong empirical evidence that lenticular (S0) galaxies are the descendants of spiral galaxies which faded after their star formation ceased a few Gyrs ago. Much of this evidence came from a detailed analysis of the Tully-Fisher relation of spiral and lenticular galaxies and their stellar and globular cluster populations. Recent numerical models of galaxy formation and evolution have now been able to reproduced the observational results. In this talk I will present the old observations and the new models, shedding some light on the physical process driving the transformation of spirals into S0s.
