Future-proofing measurements to probe the energy frontier

The Large Hadron Collider at CERN gives us direct access to physics above the key "electroweak symmetry breaking" energy scale, where the weak and electromagnetic forces come together. This scale is associated with the Higgs boson, discovered at CERN in 2012. As we near the end of the third running period of the collider, and head toward the "high luminosity" era, I will discuss how precise measurements can be made with a high degree of model-independence, and how they can therefore be used to probe both the Standard Model and physics beyond it. I will present a method of exploiting this and latest results.

Galaxies and their circumgalactic medium in cosmological simulations

Galaxies are intimately connected to the environments they live in. The haloes around them contain the gas reservoir from which the galaxies grow, while galactic outflows heat and enrich this circumgalactic medium (CGM). Understanding the CGM can thus help us constrain models of galaxy formation. Using zoom-in cosmological simulations of galaxies, I will discuss the physical properties of the gas around galaxies. The multiphase nature of the CGM is affected by the resolution of our simulations, which enhances the amount of cool, neutral gas in the halo, bringing them more in line with observations. I will show how the properties of galaxies and the CGM depend on the presence of magnetic fields, on feedback from relativistic cosmic rays, and on the inclusion of thermal conduction. I will also discuss how and why dwarf galaxies and massive galaxies are affected differently by these processes.

Can intracluster light trace the shape of dark matter haloes?

We investigate whether the intracluster light (ICL) can be used as a tracer of the shape of the dark matter (DM) haloes in galaxy clusters. Establishing such a link would provide a new way to probe the shapes of DM directly from deep imaging, to ultimately help us better understand its nature. Using the Hydrangea simulations, we measure the three-dimensional and projected shapes of the ICL and DM concentric ellipsoidal shells using the shape tensor method. We find that the ICL and DM position angles are closely aligned, with major-axis misalignments below 10 degrees, and very similar axis ratios, though the DM is slightly rounder on average. We show that the satellite distribution is a less reliable tracer than the ICL, with large misalignment angles and a bias toward more elliptical shapes. These results indicate that the ICL can serve as a useful proxy for the ellipticity and orientation of DM haloes.
