The status of single scalar field dark energy



We are entering an exciting era in cosmology, with tantalizing hints of dynamical dark energy. While current data are not sufficient to fully characterize its nature, they may already offer clues about its microphysical

properties. Assuming that the latest observations (DESI BAO + SNe Ia + CMB) are correct and that dark energy arises from a scalar field, I will show that the cosmological data exhibit a strong preference for either a non-minimal coupling to gravity or a non-standard kinetic term, along with a preference for a negative squared mass.  However, these scenarios have distinct implications at the level of the ISW, cosmic structure growth and Solar System constraints on deviations from General Relativity. I will present preliminary results assessing whether these two cases remain viable across all these probes.

The cold side of galaxy formation at the cosmic dawn



The study of galaxy formation in the first billion years of cosmic time (z>6) has recently seen a transformation due to the long-awaited data from the JWST. Galaxies that were first glimpsed by Hubble, now have measurements of star-formation, metal build-up  and ionisation properties from emission lines emerging in hot, ionised gas. The physical processes underlying early star and galaxy formation, however, require understanding of the cold gas and dust in these systems, which can now be studied by combining state of the art data from ALMA and the JWST. In this talk I will focus on the latest results to understand the build-up of the first dust reservoirs in galaxies, the distribution of cold gas and dust and the dynamical state of the cold gas in these galaxies. I will show new results on the detection of the 2175A ‘UV bump’ at z>6, that arises due to the presence of small carbonaceous dust grains (such as PAHs) and the constraints that we derive for the formation and growth of dust in the early Universe. I will furthermore talk about the formation of the first disk galaxies in the first billion years of cosmic time and the turbulence of the cold gas that has the potential to regulate star-formation activity in these early galaxies.

GA-NIFS: High prevalence of dusty and metal enriched outflows in massive star-forming galaxies at z = 3 – 9



Galactic outflows are considered to play a critical role in the regulation of the stellar mass growth of galaxies and their metal content. With the arrival of the JWST, the study of galactic outflows can be extended to the very early epochs of galaxy formation and evolution. In particular, the IFS capabilities of the NIRSpec instrument provide a unique opportunity to explore the spatially resolved properties of the outflowing gas in high-redshift galaxies through their optical rest-frame emission. In this talk I will present the results from the study of the incidence and properties of galactic outflows in a sample of 15 massive, star-forming systems at 3 < z < 9 (containing around 30 galaxies) observed with NIRSpec/JWST as part of the GA-NIFS program. We report a high incidence of ionized outflows (40%), which in several cases can be spatially resolved and display velocities that increase gradually towards higher star formation rates (SFRs). We find that the outflowing gas is more attenuated and metal enriched than the interstellar medium (ISM) of the hosts, suggesting that outflows contribute to distribute dust and metals throughout galaxies. Despite the high prevalence of outflows in our systems, we find that they generally do not have a significant impact on the star formation activity of their host galaxies. Our results indicate that ejective feedback through ionised outflows is inefficient in high-mass and luminous star-forming galaxies within the first 2 Gyr of cosmic time.
