Over the last decade, gravitational-wave astronomy has provided a unique probe of these stellar remnants. To gain information from gravitational waves, first we infer the properties of individual gravitational-wave sources from their signals. Then, we may combine our set of observations to infer the astrophysical distribution of sources. These results can be used to understand the currently uncertain astrophysics of binary formation and evolution. We will discuss the current catalogue of gravitational-wave observations, and what they tell us about binary evolution. We already see evidence of multiple formation channels, and future observations will enable precision measurements of binary formation. Particle Cosmology and Gravity Seminar Anish Ghoshal (Warsaw) Hearing the Universe Humm with Pulsar timing array: Gravitational Waves and Primordial Black Holes from First-order Phase Transition We will discuss interpretation of the nHz stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) seen by NANOGrav and other Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) Collaborations in the context of supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries. The frequency spectrum of this stochastic background is predicted more precisely than its amplitude. We will discuss how Dark Matter friction can suppress the spectrum around nHz frequencies, where it is measured, allowing robust and significant bounds on the Dark Matter density, which, in turn, controls indirect detection signals from galactic centers. Next we will discuss alternative cosmological interpretations including cosmic strings, phase transitions, domain walls, primordial fluctuations and axion-like physics. We will discuss how well these different hypotheses fit the NANOGrav data, both in isolation and in combination with SMBH binaries, and address the questions: which interpretations fit the data best, and which are disfavoured. We also discuss experimental signatures that can help discriminate between different sources of the PTA GW signals with complementary probes using CMB experiments and searches for light particles in DUNE, IceCUBE-Gen2, neutrinoless double beta decay, and forward physics facilities at the LHC like FASER nu, etc. and with Primordial Black Hole formation and its constraints in the context to theories of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking predict a strong first order cosmological phase transition. Astronomy Lunch Talk Jake Bennett Feedback and the circumgalactic medium Understanding how galaxies regulate their growth requires modelling the complex interplay between feedback and the circumgalactic medium (CGM), which can act as both a reservoir and a barrier for gas accretion onto galaxies. I will present a series of cosmological simulations exploring how feedback from stars and AGN shapes the structure and evolution of the CGM across a range of environments. Starting in the early Universe, I will discuss the high-redshift progenitors of galaxy clusters, where I explore the impact of feedback and mergers on the nascent intracluster medium. I will then turn to recent work developing new feedback models that better capture the impact of high-energy outflows on halo gas, and how these influence galaxy growth in cosmological simulations. Dr Mulryne was unable to make it this week Axion-dilaton interactions in the dark sector Axion-dilaton models constitute a well-motivated and minimal class of theories that emerge in extra-dimensional completions of high-energy physics. These models naturally feature kinetic couplings between multiple scalar fields, which can have significant consequences in late-time cosmology. I will present the cosmological implications of these interactions when prescribing an axion and a dilaton field to describe dark matter and dark energy, respectively, including the predicted effects on the CMB, late time structure growth, and particle mass evolution. I will show that these effects allow a resolution of the Hubble tension and the model to fake a phantom cross, fitting the recent DESI data as well as the phenomenological parameterisations, in a single minimal framework. The most appealing feature of these systems is that, contrary to generic many-body systems in continuous time, the dynamics of quantum circuits are sometimes amenable to analytical treatment. In the talk I will present a fruitful route to achieve this goal based on imposing a duality symmetry between space and time. Astronomy Lunch Talk Callum O?Kane Environmental Dependence of Galaxy Evolutionary Histories Understanding how environment shapes galaxy evolution remains a fundamental challenge, yet most studies focus solely on present-day properties. Here, we move beyond this limitation by reconstructing star formation and chemical enrichment histories using physically motivated galaxy evolution models that incorporate gas inflows and outflows, with parameters constrained through full spectral fitting. We analyse a sample of ~10,000 massive (M? > 10^10.45 M?) galaxies with high signal-to-noise spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, recovering a diverse range of evolutionary histories across environments spanning the field, filaments, groups, and clusters. We identify several distinct evolutionary pathways and quantify their relative abundance as a function of environment. We then assess whether differences between environments persist after controlling for stellar mass and local density, highlighting the dominant role of the small-scale environment, as traced by local density.
