Title: Extended metric-affine gravity realization of pole inflation



Abstract: Pole inflation is a powerful paradigm for building inflationary scenarios. There are many realizations of pole inflation, from elementary particle theory and supersymmetry to modified gravity scenarios. We focus on a very general class of metric-affine F(R) gravity models that incorporate all even-parity quadratic invariants of torsion and non-metricity. The resultant theory is found to be equivalent to a metric theory with a single scalar degree of freedom with a non-canonical kinetic term that features poles. Such poles in the framework of pole inflation are known to dominate the inflationary dynamics such that the predictions of the model are insensitive to the details of the potential as determined here by F(R). We analyse a simplified version of the model analytically as well as the full eleven-parameter theory numerically. We outline conditions that allow for consistent pole inflation: the presence of second-order poles as well as freedom from ghosts, and we additionally check whether specific choices of parameters predict a sufficiently small tensor-to-scalar ratio. We find that by relaxing the ghost-free requirement to only exclude ghosts near the pole, the region of viable models in parameter space is greatly enhanced, leading to a robust class of models for inflation that faithfully reproduces the attractor predictions.
