Speaker: Andrius Tamosiunas (Institute of Theoretical Physics (IFT), UAM-CSIC Madrid)

Seminar date: July 8th, Tuesday, 1 pm UK time

Venue: Seminar Room A 113 (Cripps North Building, CAPT)


Title: Probing the Shape of the Universe: Approaches with Artificial Intelligence


Abstract: While there has been tremendous success in measuring the geometry of the Universe, the question of cosmic topology remains open. A Universe with non-trivial topology would have potentially observable effects, such as "clone" images of astronomical sources or circular patterns in the CMB ("circles in the sky"). In this talk I will present an overview of the recent studies of non-trivial topologies and their observational signatures. I will outline the effects of non-trivial topology on the CMB anisotropies. Finally, I will summarise our recent efforts to employ machine learning to search for the observational signatures of cosmic topology.
