Exploring and Communicating Skyscapes - The case of Gardom's Edge and King Arthur's Hall

During prehistoric times standing stones acted as markers or highlighted alignments. Rarely did they highlight the Sun location through their shadows. This presentation will introduce a standing stone at Gardom’s Edge in the Peak District, UK, erected 2,500 – 1,500 BC. Its unusual shape shows an alignment along North-South with a tilted flat north-facing side that allows the stone to become one with its own shadow thereby empowering it. Our work is grounded in skyscape archaeology and landscape phenomenology. It uses 3D scanning for a holistic immersive virtual engagement with the site through which we can communicate astronomy to the public.

Our recent work at King Arthur's Hall will further outline the impact we have in communicating skyscapes but also exploring them in an immersive planetarium show framed by wider activities.
