The deadline to submit abstracts is the 15th February. Scientific rationale Clues to a galaxy's past are encoded in its current appearance, and by hunting down these clues, we can infer much about the life histories of these objects. Detailed studies of small numbers of individual systems are complemented by large demographic surveys, and both approaches can be connected to galaxies' high-redshift progenitors. Current cutting-edge instrumentation is being used to obtain a wealth of multi-dimensional information on morphology, kinematics, stellar populations, and gas properties, both within individual galaxies and across the population; the next generation of facilities offers even more exciting possibilities. This conference seeks to bring together experts in the fields of galaxy dynamics, chemical evolution, and galaxy environment to discuss recent results, foster collaborative discussion, and understand how much of a galaxy's past can be inferred from its present-day state. The meeting also honours the careers of Profs. Michael Merrifield and Alfonso Arag?n-Salamanca, who have played important roles in advancing astronomy in this area. Location The conference will be held in B?zios, a picturesque resort town on a peninsula in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. B?zios is renowned for its 20 stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and the lively Rua das Pedras, filled with boutiques, restaurants, and bars. The town offers a variety of water sports, from snorkeling to surfing, and enjoys a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round. Easily accessible from Rio de Janeiro, B?zios combines natural beauty with a sophisticated charm. Message-ID: Hi all, As I approach the final few months of my PhD, it's time for me to relinquish my role as Postgraduate Representative for CAPT. This means there's an exciting opportunity for someone to take over the position! This role is perfect for someone in their 1st or 2nd year (I took it on not long after starting, so don?t let being a 1st-year put you off), but 3rd-year students are also welcome to apply if they?re interested in holding the position for the year. The role is enjoyable, impactful, and looks great on a CV while requiring relatively little time or effort. You?ll work with a PG rep from the main building and SPMIC, alongside collaborating regularly with the postdoc social committee. In short, your responsibilities include: * Representing postgraduate research students at quarterly PG committee meetings. * Contributing to socials and events that strengthen the community. * Acting as a voice for PG students on any other relevant matters. During my time as PG Rep, we?ve achieved a lot and organised some fantastic events?from the usual board game and pizza nights, to larger events such as the PG/postdoc internal conferences and the big summer quiz. If you?re interested in the role, feel free to get in touch with me via email or in person. I?d be happy to chat and answer any questions you have. To help with the transition, I?m also happy to stay on for a month or so to guide you as you settle into the position before handing it over fully. Looking forward to hearing from you! While astrophysical mechanisms can account for the magnetic fields in galaxies and galaxy clusters, they may not fully explain the presence of magnetic fields in the intergalactic medium. In this talk, I will discuss the generation of these large-scale magnetic fields in the early universe, potentially arising during the inflationary era. I will present my work, which addresses the challenges associated with generating these fields during inflation. Furthermore, I will discuss our recent work exploring the possibility of magnetic field generation In the Spectator Chromo-Natural Inflation (SCNI) model. In this model, inflationary magnetogenesis is realized by identifying the non-Abelian sector of SCNI with the SU(2)_L sector of the Standard Model, providing a novel mechanism for the emergence of primordial magnetic fields during inflation. Title and abstract are below: 1D Lya power spectrum measurements from massive spectroscopic surveys The Lyman-Alpha Forest, a series of hydrogen absorption lines observed in high-redshift QSO spectra, serves as a crucial observational probe of the IGM. Measurements of the 1D power spectrum of the Lyman-Alpha transmitted flux (P_Ly??) provide valuable insights into the thermal and ionization history of the IGM, while constraining cosmological and astrophysical parameters. To assess the capabilities and precision of P_Ly?? measurements across various spectroscopic surveys, we have developed a comprehensive pipeline for generating mock datasets. This pipeline accounts for key observational and astrophysical effects, including spectral resolution, instrumental noise, contamination from metal lines, high-column-density systems, continuum misplacement, and their associated systematics. In this talk, I will present two of my ongoing projects based on applications of these mocks. The first explores the use of WEAVE-QSO to detect signatures of the patchy reionization. The second focuses on refining models for the power spectrum of metal absorption lines, such as Si II and Si III, which are correlated with Lyman-Alpha absorption. Cosmological observations and galaxy dynamics have shown us that 84% of all matter in the universe is composed of dark matter, which is not accounted for by the Standard Model of particle physics. The properties and interactions of dark matter remain one of the great puzzles of fundamental physics. Cosmological observations and galaxy dynamics have shown us that 84% of all matter in the universe is composed of dark matter, which is not accounted for by the Standard Model of particle physics. The properties and interactions of dark matter remain one of the great puzzles of fundamental physics. In this talk, I will discuss new ways to use current and upcoming astrophysical observations to improve our understanding of the nature of dark matter. Cora will be joining us online. Despite the challenging funding landscape, the Researcher Academy remains committed to supporting researchers by creating opportunities for career development and broadening their experience. This year, the CTTF will run six funding rounds, providing financial support for postgraduate researchers (PGR) and early career research-focussed (ECR) staff to access professional development activities beyond the University. These include in-person and online conferences, structured training events, and other opportunities that enhance researcher mobility and raise academic profiles. Over nearly two decades, the CTTF has awarded over half a million pounds to empower researchers to present at academic conferences, collaborate internationally, and undertake interdisciplinary projects. These activities not only enhance their professional growth but also build valuable networks and raise the visibility of our research community. Applications will be reviewed monthly on a rolling basis for the next six months, with the first round closing on Wednesday 19 February. As this is a highly competitive process with a limited budget, please encourage your PGR students and ECR colleagues to plan early and explore additional funding sources to support their applications. Successful applicants will be required to demonstrate the impact of this funding on their research or career through a short feedback form and will be invited to write a blog or create a vlog, further amplifying the reach of their research. Please visit our SharePoint page for detailed information on the application process, future deadlines, and eligibility criteria. The Researcher Academy is proud to support PGRs and ECRs, enabling them to make the most of opportunities to showcase their research and advance their careers. Cripps North Building [Image] [Graphical user interface Description automatically generated with low confidence] Next Generation Network Update Reminder: Upcoming Network Migration ? Cripps North Building This is a reminder that the Next Generation Network project will soon begin network switch migrations with a planned network outage for the Cripps North Building scheduled for: Monday 3 February from 8.30am to 7pm. During this time, there will be no access to wired or wireless network connections in the building. CGI will work to restore connectivity promptly once maintenance is complete. Please cascade this information to building users to ensure everyone is prepared for the temporary downtime. Only university-managed devices will be tested at this time, so school-owned devices will need to be checked by your team once connectivity is restored. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we carry out this essential upgrade.
