Dear All,
A gentle reminder of today's seminar
1.
Xavier Pritchard (University of Sussex) visiting Clare Burrage and Swagat Mishra for the full week
Seminar date: 19th September, Thursday, 3 pm
Venue: Seminar Room A 113
Title: Early universe degrees of freedom and primordial black holes
Abstract: In this seminar, I will begin by discussing primordial black holes (PBHs). I will walk through a typical abundance calculation, which I will hopefully convince the audience is mainly dependent on two early universe quantities: the curvature power spectrum and relativistic degrees of freedom. Through this calculation, we will see how the standard model can have an impact on PBH abundances, which I will then try and quantify. In the second part of the seminar (and time permitting), I will talk about degrees of freedom beyond the standard model as well as scalar fields, which will be tied back to PBHs.

Subject: Upcoming Particle Cosmology Seminars
Dear All,
We begin our weekly particle Cosmology seminars for this term from next week. In this term, the seminars will be held on Tuesdays at 1pm UK time. In the coming week, we have two visitors, therefore we will be having two seminars (one on Tuesday and one on Thursday). In the following, I provide the details of seminars next week, as well as a list of upcoming seminars for the term.
Week: 16/09/2024 - 20/09/2024
-----------------------------------------
1.
Visitor: Andreas Ekstedt (DESY, Hamburg) visiting Oliver Gould for the full week (more details to follow from Oli early next week
Seminar date: 17th September, Tuesday, 1 pm
Venue: Seminar Room A 113
Title: From EFTs to real-time dynamics and back again
Abstract: In this talk I discuss how classical real-time dynamics emerges at high temperatures. In particular I discuss the importance of effective-field theory techniques for making accurate predictions in heavy-ion collisions and in various cosmological settings. Finally, I discuss how these considerations directly leads to real-time simulations, which in turn allows us to test perturbation theory for phase transitions, tunnelling, inflation, and much more.
