The Open Effective Field Theory of Inflation

There is an increasing interest in the interplay between Open Quantum Systems and Inflationary Physics. A time-dependent background and limited access to the degrees of freedom invites the use of Open Quantum systems. It provides a more general framework than the unitary time evolution of a free state. In this talk, based on https://arxiv.org/abs/2404.15416, we develop a local EFT for the scalar curvature perturbations subject to the dynamics of an open quantum system. We focus on recovering the scale-invariant power spectrum and its amplitude as a function of the dissipation (among other EFT parameters). Our results largely generalize the setup of warm inflation to general non-equilibrium cases. We also explore the different shapes of the bispectrum and find two distinct behaviors, at large and small dissipation.

Rare beauty - the hunt for new physics at the LHCb experiment

When the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) began its physics programme in 2009, there were high hopes that supersymmetric particles, dark matter, micro black holes or other weird and wonderful phenomena would soon be discovered. But despite hundreds of searches performed by thousands of physicists over the past fifteen years, no direct evidence of physics beyond the standard model has been found. However, over the past few years, several intriguing anomalies in the rare decays of beauty quarks have been reported by the LHCb experiment. I will discuss what the causes of these anomalies may be - theory errors, experimental biases or perhaps genuine signs of new physics - and how the recent LHCb upgrade will allow us to zoom in even closer on these tantalising hints.
