Gravitational-wave data analysis with numerical relativity simulations of boson star mergers

Gravitational-wave signals detected to date are commonly interpreted under the paradigm that they originate from pairs of black holes or neutron stars. In this talk I will explore the alternative scenario of boson-star signals being present in the data stream and address the questions of whether they could be detected and differentiated from gravitational wave signals from binary black holes and neutron stars. I will then discuss the prospects and challenges of the research programmes targeting the tests of the GR+SM paradigm.

Connecting high-redshift galaxies and the intergalactic medium

Cross-correlating the location of high-redshift galaxies with regions of Lyman a (Ly a) transmission in the intergalactic medium (IGM) is a potentially promising probe of the tail end of reionisation. Current observational constraints are limited, but ongoing JWST programs will provide new insights. Numerical modelling of this signal, however, lacks consensus. Here, I will present our work exploring the galaxy--Ly a transmission correlation in the Sherwood-Relics suite of hybrid radiation-hydrodynamical simulations. I will highlight the physical mechanisms driving the signal, and discuss avenues for future research.
