default guest authentication - (which you should change!) and one set to Moodle
authentication which redirects to moodle until logged in and doesn't allow
guest access to author with Xerte. The latter appears to be working correctly

are using the older moodle patch which isn't compatible with 1.8. You'll need
to remove the code that you added from the patch and follow the instructions
