The OU did run a project on this but the way they were doing it required the MySQL root password to be transmitted and this was obviously a ‘NoNo’ so the project was dropped.

Talking with Colleges who would like to use Moodle on a Stick to sync with Moodle on a Server, there is another way and that is to run a scripted application on the server. This would prompt the user for authentication and then transmit the credentials to the Moodle Server within the physical constraints of the machine room in which it was housed, i.e. there would be no need to transmit any passwords across the Internet, and the risk of a user’s credentials being hacked is no greater than it is for standard Moodle access.

The work that would then be needed is to retrieve the appropriate data from the server and pass it back in an appropriate format using css technology to format the data for the particular device. The scope probably also needs to be defined, e.g. is it going to be worthwhile updating discussion boards etc., which could be completely out of date by the time a sync actually takes
