Ron,

You saved my day.
I was reinstalling Xerte but was unable to get it to work correctly.
After reading this post I realized it was caused by the link in the site_details table.
By default it says http://.... there where it should read https://...
Everything is working now perfectly.

Regarding the question of how to apply an SSL-certificate to an apache server, you could use the following link as a starting point
http://www.alphassl.com/support/install-ssl/apache.html
You could also search on the internet for https forwarding.
A starting point could be
https://www.sslshopper.com/apache-redirect-http-to-https.html
