I don't think LTI can do that, I'm not sure? Try initialising the SCORM API, see if it's available?

I found it pleasantly simple to get my Xerte content embedded into Moodle using LTI. It seems to me that this would be preferable to uploading a SCORM zip, since now all I'd need to do to push out a revision to an LO would be to click Publish instead of having to export it from Xerte and then re-upload it to the Moodle.

However, I'm wondering about reporting grades from Xerte to Moodle. When I add an LO from Xerte, Moodle adds it to the course grade book, suggesting that it should be gradable, and I've seen some talk online (mostly about other LTI tools) that suggests it's possible to report grades this way, but nothing that explains what I need to do.

Any help?

I only use Xerte online Toolkit and I think that is the right sollution for open content. XoT allows for shared work on the same learning objects.
Xerte 2.18 (and 3) are complete other applications than Xerte online Toolkit. And what I understand is that Xerte 3 is still a development version.

If you want to use an authoring tool for an organisation where multiple people need to be able to create learning objects, XoT is the best choice.

Yes, Xerte3 is the development version. It has a lot of advantages over the current version of Xerte, most notably a really nice WYSIWYG editor, but I would not recommend using it unless you've accepted the risk of encountering a show-stopping bug that you will may have to troubleshoot and fix yourself. If you are, I'd say give it a try and submit your fixes on github! :) I'm just about to complete my first project in Xerte3, and aside from having to spend time hunting down some annoying bugs (plus one big one that seems to break SCORM output in Moodle, which fortunately I don't need), I like it.

If you stick to Xerte2 (which, just to be clear, is what you should do if you aren't a developer) my understanding is that unless you need to create custom learning object templates, you should use XOT, not Desktop. I could be wrong about that, but I'm pretty sure it's what I was told earlier on this list.

This needs a bit of clarification..

 

Officially Xerte 3 is the Flex development tool and no longer under
development. The download for that is xerte3beta.exe

 

Officially Xerte = the Windows only developer tool and is action script and
Flash based and although still an excellent tool for bespoke content with
Flash player output there is no HTML 5 support and no further development of
that tool.

 

Xerte Online Toolkits (XOT) = is the webserver version and official stable
version = 2.1

 

In theory the later branches are Xerte Online Toolkits 2.2, develop, editor
etc but not Xerte 3.

 

None of the above can be said to be discontinued they still work in the way
they have for some time but all new development focus is on Xerte Online
Toolkits.

 

So in answer to the numbered questions:

 

1. XERTE project is discontinued? 
If you mean Xerte Desktop not really discontinued but Flash only.

 

2. Is there a document or tutorial to assist in the use of version 3? 
If you mean the Flex Compiler not really - you're better off with Flash
Develop etc.

 

3. What is better to use: Online Toolkit or the Desktop?

Xerte Online Toolkits if you want HTML 5 and new development.

If I was starting out with Xerte now, I would concentrate on Xerte Online Toolkits, which will give you a huge leg up in terms of getting a project up and running, and then add custom bespoke stuff to do the things that the templates don't do: then you can develop in js / css / html, you've got jQuery in there. Personally I can't justify flash based output: tablets and phones are just too big a part of the user runtime now. HTML / js / CSS with jQuery is very similar to the old xerte way of working anyway (but much better).

I liked Flex a lot: but found the changes between versions of the SDK very difficult to keep up with: I haven't followed it since it became an Apache project: it does appear to still have some life, but mailing list traffic has fallen off a cliff for Flex. Most people have moved away from it (though I think it is used most in large corporates where they have control over the user's environment.

Hi All,

When compiling a learning resource within Xerte, that I have previously started: changes take effect within the editing area but do not save when moving into preview, or when publishing.

When creating a new project: my insert button is greyed out and I cannot add anything.

Can anyone offer advice as to what the problem may be please?

For some reason videos in LOs will not play on mobile devices. I'm using the Video page template and working with .mp4 files.
The LOs open OK but when trying to play the videos they just hand. Same result on iphone, ipad and Android Samsung tablet.

I'm getting page not found errors on first 2... and on 3rd one the LO loads but on page 2 the mp4 file gives a 404 error...

The server we have xerte installed on is not accessible to public it seems, so the first two link won't work (my mistake). 

The third link should work, though,  but as you say, the video does not play and I cannot work out why.

Assuming the src is pointing to the right place I think most problems with videos not playing are to do with the encoding - it should be MP4 H.264

Thanks, Fay, for your feedback - the videos were in the right format and in the right place. 

It seems, however, the server is probably not configured to play MP4 files and I need to use these so the LOs will play on mobile devices ok. It should be a quick fix by our IT people apparently.
