I worked with a tutor with another tool (but principle is the same), and we created equations using equation editor , saved them as an image. I then entered this with the alt text where I actually typed out what I wanted to be read out (e.g. I would type "E equals M see squared") this took a lot of trial and error to get right but it did work, and the blind student we were catering for thought it was wonderful, as he had never had anything before.
