[Xerte] Remove nodes from XML structure in memory

How can I remove nodes from an xml object in memory?
E.g. I do this:
inspect(unitData.templateData.WORKBOOK[0]);
One of the properties returned is PAGE: null, null, null, null, null, null, null, null, null, null
Indicating I have 10 nodes of page data.
How do I remove the last 5 nodes of page data?
