[Xerte] Re: sandpit export

I am most definitely not a specialist developer - quite the opposite!. That is what appeared when I exported from sandpit so I can only suggest I have drastically gone wrong somewhere and not exported it - so back to drawing board for me. Thank you very much for all the patient help.

Hi all,

We've a few learning objects that use latex script to show fractions etc. They have worked in the past, after a bit of tweaking of xmlengine.swf, but now don't again. They were produced in the standalone version of Xerte, I've updated the xmlengine.swf to the one Julian sent at 14:48 yesterday and still no joy.

See for instance p.5 of
http://www.bbk.ac.uk/mybirkbeck/xerte/measurements1/
or the same one, uploaded into XOT
http://app1.its.bbk.ac.uk/xerte/play.php?template_id=227

Oddly, to me at least, that same object renders perfectly okay in Xerte
2.17 standalone, but not when seen in a web browser. Does anyone have a suggestion, or some glue to put back the hair I'm tearing out?

Many thanks,

John

I'm afraid there's definitely some confusion here :-(

That zip isn't anything that the sandpit would have exported - it looks like a copy of the Xerte 3 application which is very much for specialist developers only and not an online tool.

If you have successfully exported a learning object created on the Techdis Xerte Online Toolkits Sandpit you should have a zip file somewhere like your_learningObject_name.zip If you can find that we can help.

Regards
Ron

I have had a little help from an IT person as I had a suspicion I might be following instructions incorrectly or misunderstanding.

Basically, the object I exported from Sandpit - I did press publish but it was NOT exported as a zip for some reason. (The object I was trying to import back into the Xerte Online toolkit was totally the wrong thing - I had been trying to import the toolkit installation file rather than the learning object!) So I have now identified the correct learning object (not a zip file). We converted it into a zip then tried to import it but this time got the error message 'upload checkFile transfer has failed *** Only Xerte templates are currently imported. '

IT person helped me to check and there is no template.xml within it.
She also suggested I tell you that I created the original sandpit LO on a Mac but as I couldn't put the Xerte online toolkit on my Mac I had to do it on my work PC then save the LO to a USB and transfer it over. Maybe this is relevant?

The file is too big to send by email but she has created this link so you can see what was in my original import from sandpit.

http://tinyurl.com/xerte-export-g-outterside

If it ends up that I can't import it, do you know where I could see the text files so I can see what I wrote to try and re-create? (Which I am trying to do as part of my SCORE short term fellowship) Thanks Gill

The 2 installs (sandpit and your local) have to match identically.
The error message makes it sound like you have used a template on the sandpit which is not available in the local install.

See email about USER-FILES - I would imagine there is evidence in there.

The ID isn't exported, tis just a zip.

The deleted message isn't one i recognise, but someone might have changed the message.

If you view index.html in your local copy of the LO do you see all your content?
Did you perhaps export the LO from the sandpit without having clicked publish?
If that's the problem then try the following:

Make a backup copy e.g. copy the whole folder from the extracted zip delete template.xml copy preview.xml and rename the copy template.xml view index.htm doe that now show all your content?

If so zip up the contents of the folder (not including the original zip if that's in the folder) and then try importing that

Regarding Dave's comment/question about identical templates - there are one or two page types in the main template which you probably don't have in your local install but I doubt you've used those page types and even so this would only stop you editing those specific pages not the LO as a whole.

Finally how big is the zip - if not too big send to the list or send us a link

Ron

The content I exported is made up of multiple folders and files and I'm not sure which of these to import or how to import all of them if need be.
