ePub isn't directly an XML format.

Nerd speak says

it is a zip file
of several folders
which contain files
some of which are in the XML format
(You could argue the XHTML is XML, but ner ner ner ner ner)

You could "in theory" make a Xerte ePub creator / editor (then find some
way of zipping the content), but it's way beyond my capabilities with it (i
know next to nothing about desktop side).
