[Xerte] Re: Google Map page

Whilst we're on the subject of google maps, I'm working on a new mapping page using the Mapstraction API: I'm involved in a JISC funded project here with the geo-spatial science folks who want to bring some more advanced mapping functionality to Xerte. Mapstraction allows you to choose from a list of mapping providers for the actual base map (google, yahoo, Microsoft, open layers) and to then add layers of data on top of the map. The idea is that we want to allow people in a wide range of disciplines to create maps using geo-data: but the difficulty is in sourcing the data in the first place, and then getting it into a format (.kml) that the maps can handle, and I don't know whether that will ever be anything other than a specialist endeavour... you can use my maps at google to create KML though, so the less technical should be able to create richer maps... I might have some examples later.

Hi Thomas (and anyone else reading this thread in future)
The Flash Player trusted locations setting only applies to LO's viewed locally from a HDD or USB etc It's to protect access to the file system etc when viewing swf files locally so when viewing xerte files locally which load dynamic content or even changing things like screen size the path to your LO needs to be added to trusted locations. The best solution is to create a folder from where you will view all local LO's and set that as trusted. Again when viewing online this doesn't apply.

Also the link you've provided below is the private preview link - for others to view it's http://vcam-serendipity.dyndns.org/toolkits/play.php?template_id=2

That works fine for me and the maps displayed in the LO and when clicking the image are more or less the same but obviously the maps on google show all the extra elements.

Hi Jonathan and Alistair,

I'm not sure about this. I have no folder in my trusted locations settings, I am using IE9 under Windows 7 with Flash 11.1 (Active X) and Version 10.1 for the plugin.

I'm not having any problems as you can see in the attached screenshot which shows all this information - so apologies for the size!

In order to narrow down the possible causes, it would probably be best if you could confirm you have the same problem with my LO. If you do, then it's something to do with the setup on your workstations, if you don't, then it must be the version of XoT (or the web-server?) that you are using - I think that's probably right, but at least it should narrow down the list of suspects.

My LO (as a reminder) can be viewed at:

http://vcam-serendipity.dyndns.org/toolkits/preview.php?template_id=2

Please let me know how you get on. I'm actually quite pleased that it's now working, because it wasn't working properly at all before.

Kindest regards, Thomas.

Thanks for this.
Changes made so I can see the maps now but they look mixed up - see screenshots.

Hello Alistair,

It depends on the version of Flash Player you have installed as to where you change the settings. You don't need admin permissions.

On the latest version of flash player, just right click on the Xerte project screen and select Global Settings, then the advanced tab, then select the trusted location setting. Add a folder ensuring that includes your project folder as one of its child folders.

You will need to close and re-open your browser after making the changes.

Alternatively you may be able to get at the settings via control panel / systems and security / flash player.

Kind regards

Johnathan

Hi Johnathan
I'm getting blanks too on 3 different browsers but I'm not sure where I change the flash player settings - do I need admin rights to do that?

Hello Everyone,

Thomas thank you for trying this out.

Things are getting very strange.

I have created a brand new pageTemplates project. Added three map pages with the url's that I used before and which I included in my first email.

I have compared the map.rlm file in the projects model folder with the map.rlm file in the xerte svn and it is identical.

I published the project, zipped it up and opened it on a different PC that does not have Xerte installed. At first no maps displayed until I set the Flash Player Global settings / Advanced / Trusted Location Settings ... to include the parent folder in which the project folder was placed.

Then on reopening my browser and then the index.htm the maps started displaying and I got the same results in both Opera and Firefox.

The stoke page displayed a map of nottingham (but if I click on the map a window opens to display the map of stoke)

The nottingham page displayed a map of southern Stoke on Trent (but if I click on it a window opens to display the map of nottingham).

The london page displays a map of nottingham but zoomed in more than the first map so it is mostly west bridgford (but if I click on it a window opens to display a map of london)

I have attached the zip of the project.

I would be very interested to see if others get the same results with this project.

Kind regards

Johnathan

Hi Jonathan,

I'm unable to replicate your issue, I'm afraid. I've been 'playing' with the new features and have embedded three maps and a table which you can view at:

Are there any issues with the Google map page at the moment? Could the page's performance have been affected by changes to the main xmlEngine.swf or wizard.swf which I noticed had been updated when I refreshed my svn copy today? I have installed both of these new files into my xerte installation

I have created a page templates project with a google map page and get exactly the same results as my individual template page.

Create a xerte project
Add 3 google map pages
page 1 paste in the link for st3 and change the tooltip to Stoke on Trent
page 2 paste in the link for ng2 and change the tooltip to Nottingham
page 3 paste in the link for nw1 and change the tooltip to london

Now save and close Xerte
Now open Xerte and open your project and preview it
I get
page 1 tooltip stoke on trent but map is nottingham
page 2 tooltip is nottingham but map is stoke on trent
page 3 tooltip is london but map is West bridgford

the links as pasted in are

Page 1 = http://maps.google.com/maps?q=ST3,+United+Kingdom&hl=en&sll=52.92778,-1.129449&sspn=0.07699,0.128574&oq=st3&hnear=ST3,+United+Kingdom&t=m&z=12
Page 2 = http://maps.google.com/maps?q=ng2&hl=en&sll=52.973544,-2.107262&sspn=0.153817,0.257149&hnear=NG2,+United+Kingdom&t=m&z=13
Page 3 = http://maps.google.com/maps?q=NW1,+United+Kingdom&hl=en&sll=52.92778,-1.129449&sspn=0.07699,0.128574&oq=nw1&hnear=NW1,+United+Kingdom&t=m&z=14

Can anyone replicate this?

Kind regards

Johnathan
