[Xerte] XOT login problem

Hi all;
I've got an ancient install of XOT I use for testing stuff occasionally.It has the login stuff hardcoded and has worked fine for years.
Today I try to login (index.php) and all that gets written back is "1"
I looked the pages in root and nothing appears to have been fiddled with based on the timestamps.  But something was odd.The file with hardcoded user/pw was named index.txt.I thought that would have been index.php?
