I'm still not getting it.

You want to pose a question to the learner, which is a sound - so they are selecting from a number of sounds in the dropdown? Then they click an answer which you display when they mouse over the drop down?

Do they need to answer all the sounds?

Why not show the answers when a sound is selected, and put things the user can control under the users control, like the sound playing, and when to answer the question etc? This would be pretty easy to do in Xerte directly.

When the dropdown is closed it has a question - actually a sound which students click to play - on it.  When students move mouse over dropdown it opens and displays a choice of answers.  Each answer is clickable and coded to influence score and to indicate when correct answer is selected.
