No sure where the space is being created from so can't really do that. I've
checked and it doesn't exist in database.txt so I guess it's possibly being
added when database.php gets written during setup. Whether that's in the
code somewhere or a consequence of different OS/PHP versions I'm not sure.

In my case it was one whitespace at the end of database.php.
Process was as follows:
1. Update local copy of the XOT repository
2. Export to a folder inside htdocs
3. Run setup
4. Test creation and publish of LO - get popup errors
5. Remove whitespace from database.php no more pop-up errors

This is Win 7 64bit and using Xampp for local testing.
Curiously before removing the whitespace I also tested with Safari and the
pop-ups with safari included the word localhost. So I tried using IE again
and http://machinename/xerte17/demo.php instead of
http://localhost/xerte17/demo.php and with that got no pop-up errors. But as
I say removing the whitespace from database.php I now don't get the pop-up
errors with http://localhost/xerte17/demo.php either.

The empty pop ups are caused by whitespace at the end of two php files which
was fixed - check archives?
