Subject: [Xerte] wink swf file resizing

Hi,
I'm trying to add a screen capture video to my learning object but don't
currently have a copy of captivate. I can't use jing either because I
need to be able to edit the video. I've found a free tool, wink, that I
can use, but when I try to add a captivate movie made using wink in XOT
(or in the standalone version of xerte), it seems to resize the video
and zooms in on a small part of the screen. The resolution of the video
is 685x514. I've tried to render the video in lots of different sizes
but this doesn't seem to make a difference. When I open it as a page
wizard in xerte, there doesn't seem to be any code to resize the video
that I can fiddle with. Am I best off just getting a copy of captivate?
Many thanks for your help,
David Coast

Hi!
I made some changes (basically colors) to the template and this is the result:
http://img203.imageshack.us/i/screenshot001vd.png/
This template is fully oriented to accessibility and we see that the sound controls aren?t very usefull now
We are thinking to change de position but... when we dive into the code... we weren?t able to do anything (we know c#, visual basic.. but not flash programming...)
Now we will be very happy if we could change the height of dark blue rectangle where sound controls are placed.
Can anybody help us please?
Thank too much

Hi
I have recently created my first Xerte learning object and successfully delivered it yesterday at our college staff development day. The feedback was excellent with its powers of 'interactivity' but one thing that was pointed out was the width. I have changed the settings to fill screen but it does actually look stretched so we wondered whether there is an opportunity to have a setting to change the whole window size so it looks better on wide screen monitors and interactive whiteboards? No complaints here - just a suggestion??? :) I love using it.
Thanks
Julie

Use full screen rather than fill window to determine whether it stretches out or not.
Start new threads for new topics, rather than hijacking other threads please.

In the "controls" parameter of the sound icon (which you would intuitively set to 1)

Hi
I converted the file through Format Factory to FLV and set the size to
320, 240 (the default size for XOT) and then imported in a movie page
and it showed all the desktop, only thing I found was the speed of the
movie but maybe that was just an example you used.

Dear Nigel,
Thanks for trying this - I gave it a go myself and unfortunately it does
just seem to show the first frame (unless it's extremely sped up) - the
original video is supposed to take 15-20 seconds.

Hi,
I'm trying to add a screen capture video to my learning object but don't
currently have a copy of captivate.

What are you trying to show with that: the quality isn't very good, and when you resize it to something Xerte can display it's going to look awful I think: even at a big resolution on my monitor it looks bad. Is this a wink issue?
The problem in Xerte is because the wink movie loads up and changes the xerte screen resolution: it assumes it will be running on its own, rather than loaded into something else (like Xerte). Not sure I can do much about that I'm afraid. Has anyone else tried and got wink to work?

Dear Nigel,
Played around with minimum and maximum framerate in format factory -
still doesn't work. I guess I could try inserting loads of repeat frames
in to the swf file or something to slow it down even further? Have
attached the htm and javascript files if this makes any difference...
Am I best off trying to get a copy of captivate on an educational
licence?
Best wishes,

Try using a different frame rate in Project Settings of Wink. also
change resolution of desktop before you record as this will make the

Found word(s) list error in the subject
Dear Nigel,
Played around with minimum and maximum framerate in format factory -
still doesn't work. I guess I could try inserting loads of repeat frames
in to the swf file or something to slow it down even further? Have
attached the htm and javascript files if this makes any difference...
Am I best off trying to get a copy of captivate on an educational
licence?
Best wishes,

Hi David
I did one myself and I think it is the frame rate within settings, by
default is it set to 20 frames per second, I haven't played with that
but that should slow it down

Dear Nigel,
Thanks for trying this - I gave it a go myself and unfortunately it does
just seem to show the first frame (unless it's extremely sped up) - the
original video is supposed to take 15-20 seconds.

Hi
I converted the file through Format Factory to FLV and set the size to
320, 240 (the default size for XOT) and then imported in a movie page
and it showed all the desktop, only thing I found was the speed of the
movie but maybe that was just an example you used.

Hi,
I'm trying to add a screen capture video to my learning object but don't
currently have a copy of captivate.

It's just supposed to show the series of steps in finding and opening a
piece of software. I only have limited knowledge of these things, but I
don't think the quality is a wink issue - it's just low res - I can
easily change the resolution and/or the size of the frame that's
captured, but presumably that doesn't matter if it won't be the correct
size in xerte anyway.
Am I right to assume that captivate swf files don't have the same
problem (i.e. changing the resolution on loading?)

What are you trying to show with that: the quality isn't very good, and
when you resize it to something Xerte can display it's going to look
awful I think: even at a big resolution on my monitor it looks bad. Is
this a wink issue?
The problem in Xerte is because the wink movie loads up and changes the
xerte screen resolution: it assumes it will be running on its own,
rather than loaded into something else (like Xerte). Not sure I can do
much about that I'm afraid. Has anyone else tried and got wink to work?

Message-ID:
Thanks
Julie
PS I have tried both settings - one stretches and full screen doesn't change anything as shown below?

The stage is in 4:3 ratio: our layouts aren't fluid in that they can adapt to different screen sizes, so the best we can do is stretch it. In the longer run, Xerte 3.0 has fantastic support for fluid layouts, but it will be a while until that makes its way into toolkits.

They are text files.
Open them in notepad and do what's needed.
Just always make backup before messing about.

With respect to Wink files there was some discussion on the Xerte list a
couple of years ago.
The page in the PageTemplates project wide template that displays swf files
should display wink files as does the Text Flash SWF Page Wizard
There are a number of factors that you need to keep in mind when you create
your wink video file, the following is from the Page Wizard documentation
For Wink files use the following settings
Wink: framerate 24; Output to SWF; Preloader = No; Add Control Bar = Yes;
max project dimensions 740 x 460.
Xerte: Add movie size parameter e.g.
?740,460?
Add Interactivity parameter = Native SWF
Note: including a pre-loader in the wink render settings will cause size
problems, with its display in Xerte.
Hopefully this will resolve your wink problems.
Kind regards
Johnathan

Subject: [Xerte] Problem Getting Started with Page Wizards - for attention
of JK
Message-ID:
Hi again Jonathan,
Thank you for explaining how to access the Page Wizard instruction file and
for the obviously huge amount of work that you have put into the wizard
project. From your explanation it sounds like the perfect vehicle to enable
a non-coder like me to get exactly what I want out of Xerte.
Despite repeating the instructions several times, I have been unable to open
a wizard (I think) and I am not sure if there is a bug in my installation or
I am just being dense (most likely).
I followed the instructions for "*Starting a Xerte project that will use
Page Wizard*" but when I get to *Open the Wizard>Yes* the rlo flies down to
the minimize tray and is impossible to maximise.
In the instructions for editing Page Wizards you say:
*1. Double click on the page icon to open the Wizard interface for any Page
Wizard*
*
*
Sorry, but how do I open a Wizard once it has been closed? What exactly is
the *page icon*? Where is it? In the file I have created or in the Xerte
project screen? Is it the object with the piece of green jigsaw puzzle
circled in screenshot below? When I double click on this I get the standard
Xerte screen with data already in it (top pic of screenshot), but from your
description I understood that the Wizards work from the simplified screen
used in the Page Templates or On-line Toolkits?
So sorry to be so confused. I would really like to master this and thank
you very much in advance for your patience.
Deborah

OK Deborah,
It's interesting when you write a set of instructions that some times the
message you seek to convey is not always the one that is received :-)
Let me take you through using a page wizard and hopefully explain at the
same time why things are not currently working out for you.
1. Installing the page wizards - I am not sure from the picture you have
enclosed that they have been installed in the correct place, so let's just
check. After you unzip the page wizard download you need to place the page
wizard folders in the wizard folder of your xerte installation, usually this
is c:\program files\xerte\wizards\
so in this folder you would have new folders a) Text, b) Media etc.
You can check if the wizards are installed correctly by opening Xerte and
then pointing at the Templates menu. If the wizards are installed correctly
you should see the folders listed in the drop down menu.
2. Using the page wizards - first use Windows Explorer or My Computer to
create a folder for your new project. Then in that folder create a folder
called "Pages".
Now open xerte and create a new project by using Project / New, create the
project in the project folder you just created.
To create a page using a Page Wizard select the project's interface icon.
With the projects interface icon as the current icon click on the Templates
menu, point at one of the page wizard menus and then click on one of the
page wizards. When the Browse for computer dialogue opens scroll down to
your project folder (it should be highlighted), expand the folder and click
on the Pages folder. Now with the pages folder selected click on the "Create
new folder" button. Create a folder with a name relevant to the page you are
creating e.g. TitlePage - then click OK.
You can open the wizard when prompted, personally I don't as I like to
change the name and add a title before I open the wizard by Double clicking
on the page icon.
The reason your wizard does not open is that the templateData path is
incorrect. This value should be set by xerte automatically when you follow
the above procedure and you should never need to change it.
Give that a try and let me know how you get on.
Kind regards
Johnathan
This should create the folder

In our original testing using Wink we had the size problems mentioned by
Johnathan below which was probably due to using the the preloader. As a
result we ditched the preloader but also the Wink native controller and
imported using Xerte SWF with the Xerte swf controller. It seems to
work fine and preserves the xerte look and feel.
If you want audio with the screen capture I suggest you look at
microsoft expression encoder ( 10 minute limit in free version) output
to WMV then convert in format factory to FLV (Wink is very time
consuming as you must add audio a frame at a time). The FLV is similar
in size to the wink SWF and should give you as good a quality as the
original screen particularly if you capture only a portion of the screen
equal in size to what Xerte will display. Screen shot attached with full
screen capture shrunk to fit in Xerte .

Further to your posting, I wanted to get something off to you asap, but was
a bit short of time this morning.
The picture you included suggests a number of possible issues with what you
are doing.
When I discussed the different files in an earlier posting, i.e. .rlm, .xwd
and .xml this was because I had interpreted your posting as being interested
in how everything hung together (which may be the correct interpretation),
however you only need to concern yourself with these files should you want
to develop your own wizards, from the ones that already exist. To make use
of a page wizard you can pretty much ignore the different files and what
their roles are.
It is worth noting that a xerte project file has a .rlo extension (if made
using the pageTemplates project wide template it has a .rlt extension).
If you look at the image you posted it looks like you have opened the .rlm
file in xerte - look at the path displayed at the top of the Xerte window.
Looking at the bottom image in the jpg file you posted I am assuming that
you have created a Xerte project in a folder called "wizard" which has the
path c:\documents and settings\deborah\desktop\wizard\
and that in the wizard folder you have created a folder called pages.
If this is the case there should be a file in the wizard folder with a .rlo
extension. This is the project file that you need to open in Xerte. Once the
project file has been opened Xerte should display the path of the project in
its title bar, so that you will see that the .rlo file has been opened.
Once you have got this far you should see that one of the first icons in the
project icon tree structure is the interface icon. This is the icon you
select prior to adding a new page based on a page wizard.
Once the page wizard has been added using the process described in my
earlier posting, you should see a page icon below the interface icon (look
in the picture you posted at the icon labeled "categories" that icon is the
icon used for a page that is based on a wizard. Double click on that icon to
open the wizard.
Normally you would never open the individual files that make up a page
wizard in Xerte, you let the xerte interface handle those files for you.
If you have downloaded the "xerte 2 project that demonstrates the use of
page wizards" which is available from the Page Wizards page of the Xerte
Wiki then I recommend you
a) look at the folder structure which should clear up for you the location
of the project .rlo file and the pages folder, containing the folders for
each Page Wizard based page.
b) Open the project in Xerte and take a look at page 9 if you are unsure
that your page wizards are installed correctly and page 10 for a
demonstration of how to use a page wizard. This will show you which icon to
click on to open a page wizard once the page has been created. It will also
explain why your project keeps minimizing.
I am sure that once you get things working OK you will be fascinated with
what you can achieve by using the Page Wizards.
If there is anything you are still confused about please keep asking.
There is no such thing as a stupid question.
Kind regards
Johnathan

I had actually done exactly what you said.
I am confident the wizards are installed correctly (see screenshot). Maybe
I have the files in the wrong places although I followed instructions to the
letter.....
>From what you say Xerte isn't setting the templateData path correctly:
FileLocation + 'pageDataFolder/pageDataFile.xml'
Maybe it's my folder structure:
Project folder contains Xerte file (grey square blue globe), Common folder
and Pages folder
Pages folder contains Title Page folder
Title Page folder contains Xerte Model, Xerte Wizard and XML document
It would really help me if you could tell me what the icon looks like which
is supposed to open the wizard and what the wizard screen should look like -
i.e. is it the same as the Template Wizard /Online Toolkits screen?
I am really sorry to be such a nuisance and hope you will bear with me.
Thank you.
Deborah

If all you want to produce is a screen capture video with audio then you
could also try Camstudio.
Wink can also be used to for screen capture that is then annotated to
provide a screen by screen display which combines annotated screens and
animated sections. To see an example of this look at page 10 of the "Xerte 2
project that demonstrates the use of Page Wizards" available from the Page
Wizards page of the Xerte Wiki. For this type of usage you will need to keep
the Wink interface rather than use Xerte's own swf player control.
Kind regards
Johnathan

Have you seen the posting I made about 9 minutes ago? I wonder if our
postings have crossed.
Looking at your latest picture It looks like the wizards are installed
correctly as they are listing in Xerte.
However your second image suggests to me that you have created a page using
a page wizard, but that you are then trying to open it by opening the folder
you created it in and directly opening the .rlm file.
What you need to do is close Xerte.
Now open Xerte and open the project folder (it has a .rlo extension) by
default when you do File / Open in Xerte you will only see .rlo files
listed.
Once you have the project open you should see the interface icon in the
project tree with at least a single ordinary page icon as this is the
default structure that Xerte creates when you create a new project. If you
have added any Page Wizard based pages you will see them also listed in the
project structure. The icons look the same as the page icon, but have a
"dot" or "circle" on them that denotes they have a wizard attached. Just
double click on the page icon to open the wizard.
When you create a page based on a Page Wizard the .xcp file for that Page
Wizard is unzipped by Xerte into the folder you selected. Hence you can see
in your ...pages\title page folder the Xerte model file, the Xerte wizard
file and the xml document file. Xerte continues to use the Wizard file and
the xml document file, but the model file is only used by Xerte when you
first create the page as it uses it to copy the icon structure of the model
into the Xerte project. Part of this process includes writing the correct
templateData path to the model. So if you open the page wizard based page
from Xerte it should work fine. However since the model file remains
unchanged by Xerte the templateData path value is not updated. So if you try
to open this it will open in Xerte but when you click on the Page Icon Xerte
will collapse to the task bar as it cannot find the associated wizard and
xml data files.
I have just had a message displayed that you have made another posting to
the list. So maybe things are working for you now. If not the above may be
useful to you. Whatever the exercise will have done me good :-)
Kind regards
Johnathan

Hello again Deborah,
I have just noticed that you are the same Deborah who posted about Narration
problems.
The support for narration is provided at a project level rather than a page
level. Most pages have a narration property that allows a sound file to be
attached to the page, but the code that handles this is not in the page but
in an Entry Frame that is placed as the first icon off the interface.
Page Wizards gain Narration support by the inclusion of a Narration.rlm
Xerte model file, which is attached to an Entry Frame at the start of a Page
Wizard based project, This file can be downloaded from the Page Wizards page
of the Xerte wiki. However I have not updated the narration model yet in the
light of your recent discussions as I am waiting to see how things bed in
with the changes. Once I am sure the changes have finalised I will look at
their implications for the narration.rlm file that is supplied for use with
the Page Wizards.
Kind regards
Johnathan

Hi Jonathan,
Thank you! I have succeeded in opening a Wizard! :-) I understand now that
the problem was that I was trying to open it from the model and therefore
the templateData path value was not updated.
Your explanations have helped me to understand how things are supposed to
work. Thank you for pointing out the video tutorial on Page 10 of the
demonstration. I had missed it before and it is most helpful.
I'm looking forward to learning and playing now. Thank you so much for
bearing with me and helping me get off of first base.

Message-ID: <76608.41766.qm@web25508.mail.ukl.yahoo.com>
Dear all,
I'm finilizing the design of a course using moodle and Xerte as Authoring tool
(I'm not a programmer, but could do something)
The issue is that Xerte Pages Template is working as it should (at least as I
understand it should) and it's passing to moodle the raw score. My problem is
that when I want to pass this score to the grade book, it only works propperly
when the maximum score in moodle is set to 100 (so it calculates the correct
percentage)
So, my question is if it would be possible to pass to moodle any other
information but the raw score that can make it happen. What I would like is that
an L.O. with a maximum socre of 4 receives and calculates the Xerte score as a
percentage and not as a raw score.
Thanks before hand for your help!

Hello,
In your project there will be a folder called ?models? ? in that folder will be a file called quiz.rlm.
If you double click the file it will open with Xerte. A list will appear on the left - there are two gears / cogs and the word scorm ? left click on this
On the right hand side will be a properties window, and at the bottom will be the words text and script
Left click on script.
A script will appear.
At the top at the lines
score = Math.ceil(quizScoreTracking.sum() / quizScoreTracking.length * 100);
if (pageIcon.templateData.quiz[0].scorm == 'Track Last Score'){
_level0.setValue('cmi.core.score.raw', String(score));
}
if (pageIcon.templateData.quiz[0].scorm == 'Track First Score'){
if (isNaN(_level0.getValue('cmi.core.score.raw'))){
_level0.setValue('cmi.core.score.raw', String(score));
}
}
These lines handle the addition and sending of the value to scorm / moodle.
Changing these should allow you to send the values you want.
Backup quiz.rlm first though
Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot Patrick,
I manage (with a non very elegant solution) to work it out, changing the base of
the calculation of the raw score from 100 to the value I need and it works. As
said, not very elegant but functional. So, thanks!!!

Asunto: [Xerte] Re: SCORM Tracking different that raw.score
Hello,
In your project there will be a folder called ?models? ? in that folder will be
a file called quiz.rlm.
If you double click the file it will open with Xerte. A list will appear on the
left - there are two gears / cogs and the word scorm ? left click on this
On the right hand side will be a properties window, and at the bottom will be
the words text and script
Left click on script.
A script will appear.
At the top at the lines
score = Math.ceil(quizScoreTracking.sum() / quizScoreTracking.length * 100);
if (pageIcon.templateData.quiz[0].scorm == 'Track Last Score'){
_level0.setValue('cmi.core.score.raw', String(score));
}
if (pageIcon.templateData.quiz[0].scorm == 'Track First Score'){
if (isNaN(_level0.getValue('cmi.core.score.raw'))){
_level0.setValue('cmi.core.score.raw', String(score));
}
}
These lines handle the addition and sending of the value to scorm / moodle.
Changing these should allow you to send the values you want.
Backup quiz.rlm first though
Hope this helps.

Subject: [Xerte] SCORM Tracking different that raw.score
Dear all,
I'm finilizing the design of a course using moodle and Xerte as Authoring tool
Ricardo

Hi
Can anyone tell us if there is a limit to the amount of text that can be posted onto a page or into the learning object as a whole? Are there differences between the Sandpit version we are using and and a real institutional installation?
Promting this: a colleague and I are trying the Xerte Sandpit and seeing if some existing materials can be re-packaged easily.

Adding two more paragraphs of produces a blank page. I had a similar result testing this separatly on another computer (unfortunately that example was lost - Xerte had been running slowly and I lost the screen I was working on and it hadn't saved). Blank pages produced sometimes had the word 'null' on them.
We have yet to try this on the desktop version.
I realise our example is extremely text heavy and not ideal use of the system, but it could be important; and frustrating if an academic reaches a limit with text.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
I look after the sandpit and was able to check your LO. This is not a text
length limitation it's actually a common mistake where you've added an image
and sound page and added the text but no image. With this page type at the
moment if you don't add an image the text won't show either. So either add
an image or copy and paste the text into a text only page an that will solve
the problem.
That said you do seem to have a lot of text on some of these pages and so I
wonder if one of the navigator pages would be a better choice to break the
content down into smaller and more navigable chunks?

http://img823.imageshack.us/i/screenshot004h.png/
you?ll see that I?ve got a light-blue rectangle above the title witch
is the background of the controls?
I checked everything, made a lot of changes and I cannot set this
background
To be the same
I made all the changes on the XMLEngine.fla , I changed almos all the
the color set, but no one works... can someone tell me how can I change
it?
Thanks too much

Unsure, but the onLoad event is firing, resetting the sound.
Setting it the other way is problematic?

Stream=0 does as expected.
Sits there until the entire sound is loaded then plays.
Unfortunately the delay on some pages is a bit long due to .mp3 size (V/O's)

If you want the sound to start playing when it's loaded, play = 1, else 0.
You can have 'streaming' sounds and 'event' sounds. I always use event sounds, i.e. don't add the additional stream param.

That is:
delete stream param
add autoplay param
set autoplay to ? 0,1, 2?
What's the combo?

Unsure, but the onLoad event is firing, resetting the sound.
Setting it the other way is problematic?

If I have stream set to 1, when I run off the server the audio starts as normal, then when (I guess) it's all loaded, the audio restarts at the beginning.

Can you re-encode the mp3s to smaller sizes without losing quality?
Or try some stuff in the engine PAGE.prototype.loadSound()

Stream=0 does as expected.
Sits there until the entire sound is loaded then plays.
Unfortunately the delay on some pages is a bit long due to .mp3 size (V/O's)
