[Xerte] Moodle MObile

I'm trying to make a case for the FlexSDK, because you can take one flex project and deliver it to

PC
Mac
Linux
Android via Adobe Air (Blackberry's, Android phones)
iPhone via the iPhone Packager
etc

That's good.

However there are still differences, because events thrown by the various platforms differ, i.e. no onPress event on the mobile flash player, because there is no mouse: you need to listen for onTap or whatever it's called. I have managed to get http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/toolkits/play_560 running on froyo, but not all the interactivity works because of those differences with the events. On a tablet (something like a Galaxy) the screen is big enough to not really need any modification.

I saw some of the augmented reality games running on an iPhone over Christmas and was blown away:
http://toucharcade.com/category/games/augmented-reality/. Now you start to see what might be possible.

I'm not sure about the current status of MoMo. When I last looked only a handful of devices were supported on it and the instructions on the website for the downloads didn't work.

In my view a potentially more interesting route is to use Moodle on a Stick (e.g. MAXOS but not essential) and to sync this with Moodle on a Server. The OU did run a project on this but the way they were doing it required the MySQL root password to be transmitted and this was obviously a 'NoNo' so the project was dropped.

Talking with Colleges who would like to use Moodle on a Stick to sync with Moodle on a Server, there is another way and that is to run a scripted application on the server. This would prompt the user for authentication and then transmit the credentials to the Moodle Server within the physical constraints of the machine room in which it was housed, i.e. there would be no need to transmit any passwords across the Internet, and the risk of a user's credentials being hacked is no greater than it is for standard Moodle access.

The work that would then be needed is to retrieve the appropriate data from the server and pass it back in an appropriate format using css technology to format the data for the particular device. The scope probably also needs to be defined, e.g. is it going to be worthwhile updating discussion boards etc., which could be completely out of date by the time a sync actually takes place.

This solution wouldn't solve the 'flash' problem on mobile devices which is not restricted to iOS (imho) - I can't get Flash to work on my Android 2.2 Froyo system and when I try to download the plugin for the new Android-compliant Firefox (which works well) I get a message that Flash is not supported on this device, if I use the inbuilt browser the Xerte RLOs on our Moodle site will not run (although it says Flash 10.1 is already installed and I can run the flash games that adobe provide at http://m.flash.com.

Kindest regards and I wish you all a Flashy New Year!
Thomas

In terms of commercial content from publishers, ePub (an xml based developer friendly format) is solidly embedded in Europe, US and growing in Asia so Xerte being able to output the XML to different devices is exactly parallel to the commercial trends in big publishing houses.

When I have Xerte fantasies I think of tutors having XOT templates which can be filtered by operating system so as an author you click a drop down list on XOT to select "Android" or "PC" or "iPhone" etc and a set of templates appears that will run on that particular operating system.

That would be a great community development for people to bid for when funds come round....
Maybe I can use this list to alert funding opportunities as well so that people could form consortia round the list contributors...

Hmmm...

One viable route would be Xerte method.....
I mean..., RLO is basically an XML structure and have different apps on the different platforms to interpret and run them....

Rationale:
Using standards, the non-flash supoort on iOS sucks, because in my opinion that only leaves HTML5, which isn't mature enough (in my humble opinion).

So, for the time being, that implies dedicated players interpreting same 'documents'....

But I would be very interested in other solutions!

Tom

OK, let's try another question.

What would you choose to develop applications and content for mobile devices.

You need to author once, deliver anywhere: same source code has to go to Android, iOS, Blackberry at the very least.
Must have very good support for handling all sorts of external data sources.
Must have currency, so third party developers can be contracted for work if required.
Preferably has decent sized, active community of developers.

My thoughts entirely - Moodle is good stuff but somewhat clunky on a laptop never mind a phone...

Sounds cool but...does anyone really do courses on their 2X2 phone screen? Are there any research numbers anywhere on this?

The MOMO (Mobile Moodle) project is an Add-On to the popular Moodle<http://www.mobilemoodle.org/momo18/course/www.moodle.org> Learning Management System. It brings the ability to implement mobile learning scenarios with Moodle as a backend.
Mobile users install the MOMO client, a JAVA based application, on their mobile phones (or any other JAVA and Internet capable device). Through this client they can access courses wherever they are, which allows completely new scenarios.
Administrators install the necessary MOMO extension on their Moodle server which makes the compatible contents available for mobile usage. They can configure and maintain the system through the integrated administration interface all within Moodle.
Teachers can design courses with either several mobile elements or complete mobile learning scenarios using the tools and methodologies they know from within Moodle.

Anyone got any experience of Moodle Mobile? What is it? A means of getting moodle courses onto your phone?
